Ray Lawler
Raymond Evenor Lawler (23 May 1921 – 24 July 2024) was an Australian playwright and dramatist, actor, theatre producer and director. Lawler's most notable play was his tenth, '' Summer of the Seventeenth Doll'' (1953), which had its premiere in Melbourne in 1955. The play was notable for changing the direction of Australian drama, considered one of the greatest of the 20th century, it was adapted to a film in 1959, starring Angela Lansbury and Ernest Borgnine. The story of ''The Doll'' is preceded by ''Kid's Stakes'', set in 1937, when the characters of ''The Doll'' are young adults, and then ''Other Times'', which is set in 1945 and includes most of the same characters. Early life Lawler was born in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray on 23 May 1921, second of eight children of a council worker. Francis William Thring IV (11 May 1926 – 29 December 1994) was an Australian character actor in radio, stage, television and film; as well as a theatre director. His early career started in London in theatre productions, before he starred in Hollywood film, where he became best known for roles in '' Ben-Hur'' in 1959 and ''King of Kings'' in 1961. John Hackman Sumner, (27 May 192424 May 2013) was an English-born director and producer and theatre impresario, who was the founder and artistic director of Melbourne Theatre Company in Australia, gathering a group of later internationally famous stars including Ray Lawler, Zoe Caldwell, Barry Humphries and Fred Parslow. Biography Sumner was born in England in May 1924. At an early age he attended the National Opera Studio (known then as London Opera Studio). He served in the British Merchant Navy in World War II before commencing his career in theatre in 1947 in Dundee, Scotland as assistant stage manager. Patricia Carmel Stewart Kennedy (17 March 1916 – 10 December 2012) was an Australian actress with a long career in theatre, radio, film and television. According to one writer she was "sometimes called the first lady of Melbourne radio and theatre." Early life Kennedy was born in Queenscliff, Victoria on 17 March (St. Patrick's Day), 1916. Simon Chilvers (born 5 April 1939) is an English-born, Australia-based television actor. Early life Chilvers was born in London in 1939, and discovered art as a young child, drawing images of planes flying overhead during World War II. He attended Knox Grammar School, in the Sydney suburb of Wahroonga, from 1949 to 1956. Upon leaving school, his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in advertising.
