The Mambo Kings (soundtrack)
''The Mambo Kings'' is the soundtrack to the 1992 film of the same name, based on Oscar Hijuelos's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel '' The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love''. Artists featured on the album include Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Benny Moré, Arturo Sandoval, Linda Ronstadt and Los Lobos. It also features the Mambo All-Stars, a band composed of studio sidemen from New York City and Los Angeles. With only a couple of exceptions, the tracks were made specifically for the film. The 2000 Elektra updated edition adds a remix of Tito Puente's "Ran Kan Kan" by Olga Tañón and a rendition of "Beautiful Maria of My Soul" featuring Antonio Banderas and Compay Segundo of Buena Vista Social Club fame. Benny Moré
Bartolomé Maximiliano Moré Gutiérrez (24 August 1919 – 19 February 1963), better known as Benny Moré (also spelled Beny Moré), was a Cuban singer, bandleader and songwriter. Due to his fluid tenor voice and his great expressivity, he was known variously as "El Bárbaro del Ritmo" and "El Sonero Mayor". Moré was a master of the – the art of vocal improvisation in son cubano – and many of his tunes developed this way. He often took part in ''controversias'' (vocal duels) with other singers, including Cheo Marquetti and Joseíto Fernández. Apart from ''son cubano'', Moré was a popular singer of guarachas, Cha-cha-chá (music), cha cha cha, Mambo (music), mambo, son montuno, and boleros. Arnold "Arne" Glimcher (born March 2, 1938) is an American art dealer, gallerist, film producer, and film director. He is the founder of Pace Gallery, which by 2011 sold more than $400 million in art annually. Raymond Santos (December 28, 1928 – October 17, 2019) was an American Grammy Award-winning Latin musician, composer, and educator. Santos has played and arranged for such artists as Noro Morales, Machito, Tito Rodriguez, Eddie Palmieri, and Tito Puente among many others. He was nicknamed El Maestro. Johnny Pacheco
Juan Pablo Knipping Pacheco (25 March 1935 – 15 February 2021), known as Johnny Pacheco, was a Dominican musician, arranger, composer, bandleader, and record producer. Born in the Dominican Republic, Pacheco became a leading figure in the New York salsa scene in the 1960s and 1970s as the founder and musical director of Fania Records. Pacheco was one of the leading exponents of pachanga, a blend of Cuban rhythms and Dominican merengue in the late 1950s. Buena Vista Social Club
Buena Vista Social Club was a musical ensemble primarily made up of Cuban musicians, formed in 1996. The project was organized by World Circuit (record label), World Circuit executive Nick Gold, produced by American guitarist Ry Cooder and directed by Juan de Marcos González. They named the group after the Social club, members' club of the same name in the Buenavista, Havana, Buenavista quarter of Havana, a popular music venue in the 1940s. To showcase the popular styles of the time, such as son cubano, son, bolero and danzón, they recruited a dozen veteran musicians, some of whom had been retired for many years. Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz Telles (18 November 1907 – 13 July 2003), known professionally as "Compay Segundo", was a Cuban trova guitarist, singer and composer. Biography Compay (meaning ''compadre'') Segundo, so called because he was always second voice in his musical partnerships, was born in Siboney, Cuba, Siboney, Cuba, and moved to Santiago de Cuba at the age of nine.
