The Library Is On Fire
The Library is on Fire is an American indie rock band formed by singer/guitarist Steve Five in 2007. Their sound has been described as art punk. The band originally began from a manifesto of the same name written by Five. Five took the name from a poem by French war poet René Char while working at Strand Bookstore, after weekly meetings over coffee with Television guitarist Tom Verlaine. The band headlined their first New York show at Glasslands Gallery in 2008, with future Grammy nominees The Ting Tings opening. In March 2010, The Library is On Fire released ''Magic Windows, Magic Nights'' on Fill in the Blank Records. The album was produced by Todd Tobias, who has worked extensively with Guided by Voices and Robert Pollard. Glasslands Gallery (or simply Glasslands) was a music venue, dance club and art space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Glasslands was founded by Brooke Baxter and Rolyn Hu in 2006, as a relocation of Baxter’s earlier art space in the same building, Glass House Gallery. Hu and Baxter held the lease on the Glasslands space until 2012, when they made a turn key sale to Rami Haykal and Jake Rosenthal of PopGun presents, who had been managing bookings since 2009, and day-to-day operations since 2010. PopGun owned the business and lease for two years, until the venue was displaced to be converted into Vice Media‘s office headquarters. Robert Ellsworth Pollard Jr. (born October 31, 1957) is an American singer and songwriter who is the leader and creative force behind indie rock group Guided by Voices. In addition to his work with Guided by Voices, he continues to have a prolific solo career with 22 solo albums released so far. Todd Tobias (born 1967) is an American multi-instrumentalist and record producer, best known for his work with Robert Pollard and his band Guided by Voices. Other projects include Circus Devils, Kramies, The Library Is On Fire, and musical theater composer and lyricist George Griggs. Tobias began producing albums in 2002, first working with indie rock pioneers Guided By Voices on their album Universal Truths And Cycles.
