The Last Word (Knight Short Story)
"The Last Word" is a science fiction short story by American writer Damon Knight. It first appeared in the February 1957 issue of ''Satellite Science Fiction'' and has been reprinted twice, in '' Far Out'' (1961) and ''The Best of Damon Knight'' (1976). Synopsis The story is told in first person, by a narrator who, it soon becomes clear, is Satan. He briefly recounts his history on Earth and tells how he directed people toward destructive activity, for instance by teaching them how to make gunpowder. Now the final war is over, and almost everyone has been killed. Satan comes across a man and a woman, the last survivors, who are inside a transparent dome that keeps out the contaminated air. The two people recognize Satan for who he is; Satan is troubled by their calm certitude, and asks about the elaborate machine that he sees inside their dome. ''The Last Word'' is an American television talk show about the English language that was broadcast on CBS. It debuted on January 6, 1957, and ended on October 18, 1959. As the series neared its end, '' The New York Times'' said, "Despite its susceptibility to periodic cancellations, the program has become an authority on good English usage." Audio of episodes was broadcast on CBS Radio. The program won a Peabody Award in 1957. ''The Last Word'' is an Irish radio news review show hosted by Matt Cooper on Today FM on weekday evenings between 4:30pm and 7pm. It is produced by Patrick Haughey and includes regular contributions from American conservative commentator Cal Thomas. An hour-long weekend edition, called ''The Very Last Word'' and featuring highlights from the weekday programmes, is broadcast each Saturday morning at 7am. Eamon Dunphy originally hosted the show but stepped down in November 2002. The then ''Sunday Tribune'' editor Matt Cooper replaced him. Hanif Kureishi (born 5 December 1954) is a British playwright, screenwriter, filmmaker and novelist of South Asian and English descent. In 2008, ''The Times'' included Kureishi in its list of the 50 greatest British literature, British writers since 1945.
