The Lady From Constantinople
''The Lady from Constantinople'' is a 1969 Hungarian comedy-drama film directed by Judit Elek in her feature film debut. The film is a dramedy centering around a widowed elderly woman played by Manyi Kiss. The film was partially shot guerilla style in the streets of Budapest, with the lead actress interacting with bemused passersby on camera. The film has played in retrospective at Cannes Film Festival and Rotterdam Film Festival; it also played Out of Competition at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival and 1969 New York Film Festival. Judit Elek
Judit Elek (born 10 November 1937) is a Hungarian film director and screenwriter. She directed 16 films between 1962 and 2006. Her film '' Mária-nap'' was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. Biography As a child, she survived the Second World War first in a sheltered house on Pozsonyi Street, Budapest, and then in the ghetto (November 1944 – January 1945). From 1956 to 1961, Elek studied at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest, in the class of film director Félix Máriássy. Her classmates included Pál Gábor, Imre Gyöngyössy, Zoltán Huszárik, Ferenc Kardos, Zsolt Kézdi-Kovács, János Rózsa, Éva Singer and István Szabó. During this time she was a founding member of the Balázs Béla Studio, a workshop for experimental film. Manyi Kiss
Manyi Kiss (born Margit Kiss; 12 March 1911 – 24 March 1971) was a Hungarian actress known for her prolific career in theater and film. She was active in the Hungarian entertainment industry from 1926 until her death in 1971. Career She was born in Magyarlóna, Kolozs County, Hungary (now Luna de Sus, Romania), to Lajos Kiss and Zsuzsanna Nagy. She began acting in 1926 in Cluj (known in Hungarian as Kolozsvár). In 1928, she moved to Miskolc and subsequently performed in Szeged, Hungary, from 1929 to 1932. From the start of her career, she displayed a natural acting style, exceptional dance skills, and a talent for performing comic roles. In 1932, she briefly performed abroad in circuses with her Italian artist husband. Upon returning, she made her debut in Budapest in 1934 but was not immediately contracted by any theater.
