The Key (Nocturnus Album)
''The Key'' is the debut studio album by American death metal band Nocturnus. It was released on Earache Records on October 1, 1990. Background Browning has claimed that he has not seen any royalties from either this album or its follow up since he was kicked out of the band, blaming both former band members and Earache Records. Composition A concept album, ''The Key'' is centered on an occult (the influence of drummer/vocalist Mike Browning) meets sci-fi (influenced by guitarist Mike Davis) theme. The story follows a cyborg who travels back in time to the year 0 B.C. to assassinate Jesus Christ which leads to the destruction of Christianity (highlighted by the controversial track "Destroying the Manger") and the creation of a modern empire. Nocturnus, currently Nocturnus AD, is a Florida death metal band formed in Tampa, Florida, in 1987 by the drummer and vocalist Mike Browning (ex–Morbid Angel). History Formation Nocturnus was formed in 1987 by drummer and vocalist Mike Browning following the breakup of his old band, Incubus. The band was formed by Browning, former Incubus guitarist Gino Marino, and former Agent Steel bassist Richard Bateman. The band eventually began working on material and added a second guitarist, Vincent Crowley. This first lineup recorded one self-titled demo in 1987. Crowley quit (going on to form Acheron) and was replaced by then-unknown 18-year-old guitar prodigy Mike Davis, who was also Marino's cousin. Bateman quit shortly afterward to join Nasty Savage. Nocturnus added new bassist Jeff Estes and a keyboard player, Louis Panzer, in 1988. Daniel Seagrave (born 1970) is an English-born visual artist who created many album covers for death metal bands, especially in the early 1990s. His works are typically highly detailed. Seagrave grew up in Ravenshead near Nottingham and now lives in Toronto, Canada. He is a self-taught painter. He also works on mural designs and sells his art as posters.
