Along with Picasso's '' Les Demoiselles d'Avignon'', ''Le bonheur de vivre'' is regarded as one of the pillars of early modernism. The monumental canvas was first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants of 1906, where its cadmium colors and spatial distortions caused a public expression of protest and outrage. ''Joy of Life'' (''La Joie de vivre'') is an oil painting by Suzanne Valadon, completed in 1911. It was bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York, in 1967. Description and interpretation Suzanne Valadon's ''Joy of Life'' depicts a landscape with four nude and seminude women who are watched by a nude man. The nude male was modeled by Valadon's lover, André Utter. They met through her son, Maurice Utrillo, and Utter modeled nude for several of Valadon's paintings, including ''Adam and Eve'' (1909) and '' Casting the Net'' (1914). ''Joy of Life'' is based on the theme of "women as nature", a typical subject at the time. Gill Perry has argued that the painting reworks the theme of bathers in nature. Reception William Ruhlmann reviewed the album for Allmusic and wrote that the arrangements "never get too lively or somber" and felt the casual, mid-tempo pieces were an assertion by Riddle of his stature with the popularity of Billy May and Gordon Jenkins. Release and reception "The Joy of Living" was Richard's second single with Marvin, excluding their work with the Shadows, with the first, " Throw Down a Line", released the previous year.
