The Italian Brigand's Wife
''The Italian Brigand's Wife'' is an 1826 genre painting by the French artist Léon Cogniet. It depicts the wife a brigand in the hills of Southern Italy, examining the plundered goods of a traveller including a length of silk which she holds up for inspection. Depictions of Italian outlaws were a common theme in romantic art of the era. Cogniet produced it as a pendant piece for a painting by his friend Achille-Etna Michallon depicting a brigand chief. Cogniet produced three versions of the painting during 1825 to 1826, possibly anticipating exhibiting one at the Salon of 1827. Léon Cogniet
Léon Cogniet (29 August 1794 – 20 November 1880) was a French history and portrait painter. He is probably best remembered as a teacher, with more than one hundred notable students. Biography He was born in Paris. His father was a painter and wallpaper designer. In 1812, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-arts, where he studied with Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. He also worked in the studios of Jean-Victor Bertin. After failing an attempt to win the Prix de Rome in 1816, he won the following year with his depiction of ''Helen Rescued by Castor and Pollux''Grunchec, P. (1985). Émile Jean-Horace Vernet (; 30 June 178917 January 1863) more commonly known as simply Horace Vernet, was a French painter of battles, portraits, and Orientalist subjects. Biography Early career Vernet was born to Carle Vernet, another famous painter, who was himself a son of Claude Joseph Vernet. He was born in the Paris Louvre, while his parents were staying there during the French Revolution. ''Italian Brigands Surprised by Papal Troops'' is an 1831 painting produced in Rome by Horace Vernet. It is kept at the Walters Art Museum, in Baltimore. History The painter Horace Vernet came to Italy in 1829, when he was already a well-known artist. He remained there until 1834 and worked as the director of the French Academy in Rome. During his travels, he made around 20 paintings with the same colorful subjects and episodes of local life in the Roman countryside. They were works comparable to other painters who traveled Italy and mixed artistic classicism with research into color and local costumes. Achille-Etna Michallon
Achille Etna Michallon (22 October 1796 – 24 September 1822) was a French painter. Michallon was the son of the sculptor Claude Michallon and nephew of the sculptor Guillaume Francin. He studied under Jacques-Louis David and Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes. In 1817, Michallon won the inaugural Prix de Rome for landscape painting. He travelled to Italy in 1818 and remained there for over two years. This trip had a profound influence on his work. Before he had much time to develop what he had learned however, he died at the age of 25 of pneumonia, a tragedy which cut short the life of a talented and well respected artist who could have gone on to win lasting fame.
