Yob (stylized as YOB) is an American doom metal band from Eugene, Oregon, composed of singer/guitarist Michael Scheidt, bassist Aaron Rieseberg and drummer Dave French. Their most recent studio album '' Our Raw Heart'' was released in June 2018. History Beginnings (1996–2006) Before founding YOB, Scheidt had been a bass guitarist with the hardcore bands Chemikill, Dirty Sanchez, and H.C. Minds. Scheidt switched to guitar and vocals and founded YOB in 1996 with bassist Lowell Iles and drummer Greg Ocon. The band's self-titled demo was submitted to Stonerrock.com in 1999. In 2001, YOB recorded its first full-length record for 12th Records in Spokane, Washington, entitled '' Elaborations of Carbon''. By this time, Isamu Sato (of the bands H.C. Stoner rock, also known as stoner metal or stoner doom, is a rock music fusion genre that combines elements of doom metal with psychedelic rock and acid rock. The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered foremost by Kyuss and Sleep (band), Sleep. Characteristics Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo and features a heavily Distortion (music), distorted, Groove (music), groove-laden bass-heavy sound, melodic vocals, and "retro" production. Due to the similarities between stoner and sludge metal, there is often a crossover between the two genres. ''Catharsis'' is the second studio album by the heavy metal band YOB. It was released in 2003 on Abstract Sounds, and was reissued in 2014 by Relapse Records via vinyl. Critical reception Reception to Catharsis was fairly positive. Alex Henderson for ''AllMusic'' called the album "enjoyably solid, especially if one has a taste for dark, ominous doom metal."
