The History Of Rock With Chris Langham
''The History of Rock with Chris Langham'' was a BBC radio comedy broadcast in the United Kingdom in 1984. It was narrated by Chris Langham, and was broadcast as three half-hour episodes. Across the three episodes the show documented the progression of rock music in a comedic manner, detailing fictional stories about famous musicians and the way rock music evolved through the twentieth century. Langham's narration let the story unfold, and there were frequent impersonations of rock stars and their songs, parodying the styles of artists such as Elvis Presley and The Beatles. As well as Langham, the show was voiced by Mark Arden, Janice Kramer, Steve Frost and Philip Pope (the latter of whom collaborated with Steve Brown in writing and performing the musical material). Radio comedy, or comedic radio programming, is a radio broadcast that may involve variety show, sitcom elements, sketches, and various types of comedy found in other media. It may also include more surreal or fantastic elements, as these can be conveyed on a small budget with just a few sound effects or some simple dialogue. Radio comedy began in the United States in 1930, based on the fact that as most United Kingdom music hall comedians such as Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel progressed to silent films, they moved to Hollywood and fed the radio comedy field. Another British music hall comic, George Formby, stayed in the British movie industry, and in 1940 joined the Entertainments National Service Association to entertain British World War II troops. Chris Langham
Christopher Langham (born 14 April 1949) is an English writer, actor, and comedian. He is known for playing the cabinet minister Hugh Abbot in the BBC sitcom ''The Thick of It'', and as presenter Roy Mallard in '' People Like Us'', first on BBC Radio 4 and later on its transfer to television on BBC Two, where Mallard is almost entirely an unseen character. He subsequently created several spoof advertisements in the same vein. He also played similar unseen interviewers in an episode of the television series '' Happy Families'' and in the film '' The Big Tease''. He is also known for his roles in the television series ''Not the Nine O'Clock News'', '' Help'', and '' Kiss Me Kate'', and as the gatehouse guard in ''Chelmsford 123''.
