The Heights Of Abraham
The Heights of Abraham is an electronica collaboration based in Sheffield and Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire in North-East England. Formed in the mid-1990s by Steve Cobby, Sim Lister and Jake Harries, they play electronica, ambient techno, and chill out. Formed in 1992 their debut releases (''Tides EP'' and ''Humidity'' LP) came in 1992 on the ambient-downtempo label Pork Recordings (also based in Hull). With David McSherry; who forms Fila Brazillia with Cobby; Cobby and Lister created their own music label, Twentythree Records. Their album ''Electric Hush'' was voted one of the 'Top 20 Dance Albums' of 1995 by dance and club-culture magazine, Mixmag. In February 2013 (bar the ''Electric Hush'' album), Heights of Abraham moved to Steel Tiger Records. Kingston Upon Hull
Kingston upon Hull, usually abbreviated to Hull, is a port city and unitary authorities of England, unitary authority in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The Cutler
The Cutler is an electronica collaboration from Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire. Formed by Steve Cobby, formerly half of Fila Brazillia, and David 'Porky' Brennand, founder of Pork Recordings, they play electronica and Dub music. Formed in 2006, their debut release came in 2007 – on the electronica label Steel Tiger Records (based in Hull/Sheffield and established by Cobby with Sim Lister in 2006) – with the single, ''Stiletto''. On 11 June 2013, The Cutler were a front-page feature article on Bandcamp; the article's author is Andrew Jervis, the head curator at Bandcamp – he wrote, "The mojo is indeed back. ''Mixmag'' is a British electronic dance and Nightclub, clubbing magazine published in London. Launched in 1983 as a print magazine, it has branched into dance events, including festivals and club nights. History The first issue of ''Mixmag'' was printed on 1 February 1983 as a 16-page black-and-white magazine published by Disco Mix Club, a DJ mailout service. The first cover featured American music group Shalamar. Pork Recordings is a record label based in Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, England, that specialises in electronica, mostly in the downtempo or chill-out styles. Chill Out
Chill-out (shortened as chill; also typeset as chillout or chill out) is a loosely defined form of popular music characterized by slow tempos and relaxed moods. The definition of "chill-out music" has evolved throughout the decades, and generally refers to anything that might be identified as a modern type of easy listening. The term "chill-out music" – originally conflated with "ambient house" – came from an area called "The White Room" at the Heaven nightclub in London in 1989. There, DJs played ambient mixes from sources such as Brian Eno and Pink Floyd to allow dancers a place to "chill out" from the faster-paced music of the main dance floor. Ambient house became widely popular over the next decade before it declined due to market saturation. In the early 2000s, DJs in Ibiza's Café Del Mar began creating ambient house mixes that drew on jazz, classical, Hispanic, and New Age sources. Steve Cobby
Steve Cobby is a British producer, musician, composer, and DJ, based in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire. He is best known for being part of Fila Brazillia. Career After disbanding his first commercially released band Ashley & Jackson on Big Life records, he co-founded Fila Brazillia with David McSherry in 1990. Together they released 10 critically acclaimed LPs and produced over 70 remixes for artists as diverse as Radiohead, Busta Rhymes, Black Uhuru, Simple Minds, James, A Certain Ratio and Moloko. He formed Pork Recordings with David Brennand in 1990 then 23 Records in 1999 with Sim Lister and David McSherry and finally Steel Tiger Records in 2006 with Lister. Hey, Rube! is an electronica collaboration from Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was formed by Stephen Mallinder, a founder of Cabaret Voltaire, and Steve Cobby, of The Cutler, The Heights of Abraham, Chieftain and J*S*T*A*R*S and half of Fila Brazillia. J*S*T*A*R*S is an electronic musical collaboration formed by Steve Cobby and Sim Lister in 2002, from Kingston upon Hull and Sheffield in Yorkshire. Their debut release was a 12" vinyl, "Tripping the Light Fantastic" / "Ickey Plush" on the electronica label, Twentythree Records, which was also based in both Hull and Sheffield. Their first album, ''Put Me on a Planet'' (Steel Tiger Records) was named "one of the surprise hits of 2006" by Matt Anniss in the December 2006 issue of ''International DJ Magazine''. Cobby and Lister were founders of both Steel Tiger Records and Twentythree Records. J*S*T*A*R*S's track "Loose Nuke Threat" from ''Put Me on a Planet'' featured in television/cinema advertisements for the John Lewis Partnership spring campaigns for 2004 and 2005. Steel Tiger Records is a record label based in Yorkshire, England. The label was founded in late 2006 by Steve Cobby and Sim Lister. Steve Cobby was formerly half of the iconic electronic music duo Fila Brazillia, in addition to his many other musical aliases, most notably The Solid Doctor - with The Heights of Abraham and Mandrillus Sphynx these are to be found on Twentythree Records.
