Fred Becker (actor)
Fred H. Becker (November 6, 1895 – July 18, 1918) was a college football player for the University of Iowa. He was a first team All-American in 1916, the first Hawkeye in any sport to earn first team All-American honors. He died at age 22 fighting in World War I. Playing career Fred Becker graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1914. From there, Becker went on to play football for the University of Iowa. In his only season as a sophomore in 1916, Becker was a standout on the Iowa squad. In Iowa's 19-16 victory over Iowa State, he became the first known Hawkeye to block two opposing punts. Walter Eckersall of the Chicago Tribune named Becker a first team All-American. He was the first Hawkeye in any sport to achieve such a high honor. Eckersall wrote, "No matter where he was placed, his work was a feature. He was strong and powerful and quick to size up the attack of his opponents. Ora Carew
Ora Carew (born Ora Whytock; April 19, 1891 – October 26, 1955), was an American silent film actress. She starred in several films between 1915 and 1925. She was known as one of the Sennett Bathing Beauties. Early life Ora Whytock was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to James Whytock and Evelyn Carn Whytock. She had an older sister, Evelyn Whytock Lehners, who became a music composer, and a younger brother, Grant Whytock, who became a film editor. Ora's birth year has been listed as 1893, on her death certificate and is also what her grave says, but Utah birth index and the 1900 census indicate 1891. She was educated by private tutors and at Roland Hall Seminary. After her father died on June 19, 1896, her mother moved with her three children to California. Gloria Joy
Gloria Joy (born Corrine Louise Johnson; October 7, 1910 – January 25, 1970) was an American actress whose career began at age seven in 1918 during the silent film era. She mostly performed as a child actress from the late 1910s, through the 1920s, before retiring from the industry in 1934. Early life and career Gloria Joy was born Corrine Louise Johnson in Los Angeles, California to Oral Lavon and Louise Corinne ( Gordon) Johnson. She began her career in the film industry at age seven when her stepfather, Sherwood MacDonald, formed Mission Productions in the autumn of 1918 to produce a series of films showcasing Joy as a child actress. The first of the series was ''The Fortunes of Connie'', released by Pathé on 22 December of that year. A silent film is a film without synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of inter- title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era, which existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in larger cities, an orchestra—would play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. Julius Theodore von Eltz (November 5, 1893 – October 6, 1964) was an American film actor, appearing in more than 200 films between 1915 and 1957. He was the father of actress Lori March. Early life Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Von Eltz was a Yale University professor's son. After 12 years at an eastern private boarding school, he served in France for eight months during World War I. He followed his war experience with ventures into oil fields in Texas and on the stage in New York. In September 1921, von Eltz married Peggy Prior. They had a daughter, Lori March, Lori, and a son, Theodore, Jr. In 1928, the couple separated, reconciled, and finally divorced on November 7. Walter K. Whitman (April 25, 1859 – March 27, 1928) was an American character actor of the stage and screen who was active during Hollywood (film industry), Hollywood's silent film, silent era. He is not to be confused with the influential poet of the Walt Whitman, same name. Biography Whitman had a long career on the stage in cities like New York City, New York, Boston, and Chicago before he began appearing in Triangle Film Corporation, Triangle films in the 1910s, at which point he was already an older man. He died on March 27, 1928, in Santa Monica, California. "I was only a country lad, but I had seen so many real good shows at our local opera house that I made up my mind I would be an actor," he'd later tell reporters of his beginnings.
