The Forest Of Time
''The Forest of Time'' is an alternate history novella by American writer Michael Flynn. It was originally published in the June 1987 issue of ''Analog'' magazine. In 1988, the story was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novella. It was reprinted in the anthologies '' The Year's Best Science Fiction: Fifth Annual Collection'' (1988) and '' Roads Not Taken: Tales of Alternate History'' (1998), as well as Flynn's short story collection '' The Forest of Time and Other Stories'' (1997). Plot The story is set in an alternative world wherein the Thirteen Colonies, after gaining independence from Britain, did not succeed in creating the United States, but instead developed into separate and mutually hostile nation-states which often fight bitter wars with each other. Michael Flynn (writer)
Michael Francis Flynn (December 20, 1947 – September 30, 2023) was an American science fiction author. Nearly all of Flynn's work falls under the category of hard science fiction, although his treatment of it can be unusual since he applied the rigor of hard science fiction to "softer" sciences such as sociology in works such as ''In the Country of the Blind''. Much of his short fiction appeared in ''Analog Science Fiction and Fact''. Early life and education Flynn was born in Easton, Pennsylvania to his parents, Joseph and Rita (Singley) Flynn. The Pennamite–Yankee Wars or Yankee–Pennamite Wars were a series of conflicts consisting of the First Pennamite War (1769–1770), the Second Pennamite War (1774), and the Third Pennamite War (1784), in which settlers from Connecticut (Yankees) and Pennsylvania (Pennamites) disputed for control of the Wyoming Valley along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River. Both colonies and later states declared that their original land grants gave them control of this territory. In 1799, the Wyoming Valley became part of Pennsylvania, ending the conflict. The samurai () were members of the warrior class in Japan. They were originally provincial warriors who came from wealthy landowning families who could afford to train their men to be mounted archers. In the 8th century AD, the imperial court downsized the national army and delegated the security of the countryside to these privately trained warriors. Eventually the samurai clans grew so powerful that they became the ''de facto'' rulers of the country. In the aftermath of the Gempei War (1180-1185), Japan formally passed into military rule with the founding of the first shogunate. The status of samurai became heredity by the mid-eleventh century. Lord Darcy is a detective in a fantasy alternate history, created by Randall Garrett. The first stories were asserted to take place in the same year as they were published, but in a world with an alternate history that is different from the real world and that is governed by the rules of magic rather than the rules of physics. Despite the magical trappings, the Lord Darcy stories play fair as whodunnits; magic is never used to "cheat" a solution, and indeed, the mundane explanation is often obscured by the leap to assume a magical cause. Title character Lord Darcy is the Chief Forensic Investigator or Chief Criminal Investigator for the Duke of Normandy (Prince Richard, the brother of the king), and sometime Special Investigator for the High Court of Chivalry. ''The Ultimate Solution'' is a 1973 alternate history novel by journalist and former ''Playboy'' interviewer Eric Norden (pen name for Eric Pelletier), set in a world where the Axis forces won World War II and partitioned the world between them.
