''The Firm of Girdlestone'' is a novel by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was first published in 1890 by Chatto and Windus in London, England. In 1915 a silent film adaptation '' The Firm of Girdlestone'' was made. A 1958 BBC television adaptation '' The Firm of Girdlestone'' was also produced. Plot summary John Girdlestone owns the firm of Girdlestone. It is a very lucrative business and John Girdlestone and his son Ezra Girdlestone are respected by everyone. Both father and son are cynics and have no other thought but for their business; after giving a donation of £25 for charity, John Girdlestone remarks to himself that it is not a bad "investment", as it will make a favourable impression on the collector, who is a Member of Parliament, whose influence he hopes to use some day. Eric Norman Thompson (9 November 1929 – 30 November 1982) was an English actor, scriptwriter and stage director. He is best remembered for creating and performing the English narration for ''The Magic Roundabout'', which he adapted from the original French '' Le Manège enchanté''. Early life Eric Norman Thompson was born on 9 November 1929 in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England, the son of Annie (née Jackson) and George Henry Thompson, a hotel waiter, and grew up in Rudgwick, Sussex, attending Collyer's School, Horsham. He trained to be an actor at the Old Vic acting school in London and joined the Old Vic theatre company in 1952. Walter Randall (26 June 1919 – 5 May 2008) was a British dancer turned actor with numerous roles in British television, including parts in '' The Saint'', '' Out of This World'', ''Yes Minister'', '' The Professionals'' and ''Dixon of Dock Green''. His film appearances included roles in '' The Hand'' (1960) and '' Tiffany Jones'' (1973). He appeared in the ''Doctor Who'' story '' The Aztecs'' in 1964, and was interviewed for the DVD release in 2002. Five further appearances on the programme followed, the last of which was ''Planet of the Spiders'' in 1974. Colin Abel Jeavons (born 20 October 1929) is a British retired actor and TV presenter. He is known for his character roles and has worked in theatre, television and film, especially in literary adaptations and roles related to the works of Charles Dickens. He was born in Monmouthshire, Wales. Geoffrey Hibbert (2 June 1922 – 3 February 1969) was an English stage, film and television actor. Gawn Grainger (12 October 1937 – 17 May 2025) was a Scottish actor, playwright and screenwriter. Early life Some sources indicate he was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 12 October 1937. He was the son of Charles Neil Grainger and his wife Elizabeth (née Gall). Educated at Westminster City School in Victoria, London, he later trained for the stage at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Grainger made his first London appearance as a boy in 1949, when he played in ''Where the Rainbow Ends'', opposite Anton Dolin, at the Comedy Theatre, London.
