The Fire () is a 1916 Italian silent film directed by Giovanni Pastrone. It is loosely based on the novel '' The Flame'' by Gabriele D'Annunzio. Giovanni Pastrone
Giovanni Pastrone, also known by his artistic name Piero Fosco (13 September 1883 – 27 June 1959), was an Italian film pioneer, director, screenwriter, actor and technician. Pastrone was born in Montechiaro d'Asti. He worked during the era of the silent film and influenced many important directors in the international cinema with '' Cabiria'', such as David Wark Griffith in ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915) and ''Intolerance'' (1916). Martin Scorsese believes that Pastrone's work in Cabiria can be considered as the invention of the epic movie and he deserves credit for many of the innovations often attributed to D.W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille. Among those was the extensive use of a moving camera, thus freeing the feature-length narrative film from "static gaze". He died in Turin on 27 June 1959. The Flame (novel)
''The Flame'' () is a 1900 novel by the Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio. It is set in 1883 Venice and tells the story of a young artist and his mistress, a famous but quickly aging actress. The story was inspired by D'Annunzio's relationship with the actress Eleonora Duse. The novel contains expositions of many of D'Annunzio's theories about drama, largely inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche and Richard Wagner. The novel was published in English in 1900 as ''The Flame of Life''. A new translation was published in 1991 as ''The Flame''. It was conceived as the first part in a trilogy, ''The Novels of the Pomegranate'' (''Romanzi del melograno''), but the two other books were never written. Giuseppa Iolanda Menichelli (10 January 1890 – 29 August 1984), known professionally as Pina Menichelli, was an Italian actress. After a career in theatre and a series of small film roles, Menichelli was launched as a film star when Giovanni Pastrone gave her the lead role in ''The Fire (1916 film), The Fire'' (1916). Over the next nine years, Menichelli made a series of films, often trading on her image as a ''diva'' and on her passionate, decadent eroticism. Menichelli became a global star, and one of the most appreciated actresses in Italian cinema, before her retirement in 1924, aged 34. Since her death, restorations of Menichelli's surviving films have been shown at important film festivals, and her filmography has been re-assembled and re-evaluated by film historians. Febo Mari (1884–1939) was an Italian actor and film director. He found success as a leading man during Italy's silent film era. Early life Febo Mari was born Alfredo Giovanni Leopoldo Rodriguez in Messina, Sicily. His family were wealthy and of Iberian descent. He graduated from Peloritana University, having studied literature and philosophy, and soon began acting in theatre. By age 27 he was managing the Manzoni Theater in Milan. He entered the silent film industry in the early 1910's. His first feature length film was ''La ribalta'' (1912), directed by prolific Mario Caserini. The first film Mari acted in and scripted was ''Il fuoco'' (1915). ''Il fauno'' (1917), one of Mari's best known films, it was restored in 1994 by Cinematek from original nitrate prints, obtained from the Cineteca Friuli and the National Museum of Cinema.
