"The Face of Dorian Gray" is the debut single written and recorded by English singer Robert Marlow, released as both a 7-inch and 12-inch single in 1983 by Reset Records. Produced by Vince Clarke and Eric Radcliffe, it was recorded at Blackwing Studios in London. The single peaked at No. 93 on the UK Singles Chart, Marlow's only single to chart. The album that it was intended to be on, ''The Peter Pan Effect'', was later released in 1999 by Swedish label Energy Rekords. Robert Marlow
Robert Marlow (born Robert Allen, 21 October 1961 – 22 September 2022) was an English synth-pop singer, songwriter and musician. Biography Robert Marlow grew up in Basildon with future Depeche Mode members Vince Clarke, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher (who died the same year as Marlow, and at the same age). He was also tied to Alison Moyet, with whom he had played in a band, The Vandals. He knew Fletcher and Clarke from the Basildon chapter of the Boys' Brigade. He and Clarke would occasionally get together to play music. Clarke on guitar, and Marlow on the church's piano. Like Clarke, he played in many local bands, and ended up playing in a band, with Clarke, called The Plan, and later French Look, with Martin Gore and Paul Redmond. Blackwing Studios was an English recording studio, most notable for early Depeche Mode and Yazoo recordings in the early 1980s. Background The Blackwing Studios complex was housed inside a deconsecrated church in south-east London. All Hallows church was partly destroyed during The Blitz in 1941. After the war, Southwark Cathedral retained the north aisle and carried on using it as a temporary church. Reset Records was a British record company founded in 1983 by Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Assembly, Erasure) and Eric Radcliffe. The four singles by Robert Marlow were released on this label from his friend Vince Clarke. Peter Hewson, Absolute and Hardware also released some singles on the label. History Beginnings Some time after Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode, in 1982 while working with Yazoo, his friend Robert Marlow approached him. Vincent John Martin (born 3 July 1960), known professionally as Vince Clarke, is an English synth-pop musician and songwriter. Clarke has been the main composer and musician of the band Erasure since its inception in 1985, and was previously the main songwriter of several groups, including Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and the Assembly. In Erasure he is known for his deadpan and low-key onstage demeanour, often remaining motionless over his keyboard, in sharp contrast to lead vocalist Andy Bell's animated and hyperactive frontman antics. Erasure have recorded over 200 songs and have sold over 28 million albums worldwide. Vince Clarke was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 as a member of Depeche Mode. Eric Charles Radcliffe (often credited as E.C. Radcliffe - born 3 December 1950) is an English recording engineer and producer who worked with new wave and synthpop bands in the early 1980s in Basildon, England. He later became owner of Blackwing Studios. Background Eric Radcliffe is believed to have had a huge part in the success of Yazoo (Yaz in the USA). Energy Rekords is a record label formed in 1990 by the merging of the three labels: Front Music Production, Electronic Beat Association, and Energy - all small labels run from the Swedish town of Älmhult. By banding together these labels' founders Håkan Ehrnst, Krister Svensson and Per Faeltenborg formed a foundation for the Swedish electronic music in the 1990s by signing up new emerging artists like S.P.O.C.K and Daily Planet as well as veterans such as Page, Blue for Two, and Oil in the Eye from the UK.
