The Disinformation Project
The Disinformation Project is an independent, interdisciplinary and non-government New Zealand research team that has been collecting and analysing data on the causes and impact of mis- and disinformation within the country's society from the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 through to, and beyond, the 2022 Wellington protest when the grounds of Parliament House and surrounding streets were occupied by anti-vaccine and anti-mandate groups. Research by the Project identifies how the digital world, shaped by social media platforms globally, has the potential to normalise hateful and violent ideas that some political structures have historically used to create narratives and realities which, by social exclusion and marginalisation, can control groups within a society by increasing their vulnerability to disinformation. Infodemic
An infodemic is a rapid and far-reaching spread of both accurate and inaccurate information about something, such as a disease. The word is a portmanteau of "information" and "epidemic." As facts, rumors, and fears mix and disperse, it becomes difficult to learn essential information about an issue. In 2020, alongside the COVID-19 pandemic, an infodemic of disinformation raises concerns for information quality in online environment. This effect was demonstrated in a study of news stories shared on Twitter; in the study, news stories rated as incorrect by fact-checking organizations spread to far more people than factual articles did. Gettr
Gettr (stylized GETTR) is an alt-tech social media platform and microblogging site targeting American conservatives. It was founded by Jason Miller (communications strategist), Jason Miller, a former Donald Trump aide, and was officially launched on July 4, 2021. Its user interface and feature set have been described as very similar to those of Twitter. The platform experienced issues shortly after launch, including internet trolls posting content that violated the terms of service, users flooding it with pornography, and the brief hacking of some high-profile accounts. Journalists have observed the prevalence of extreme content on the platform, including racism, antisemitism, and terrorist propaganda. By November 2021, Gettr said it had almost 3million total users and almost 400,000 daily average users. As of February 2022, the company said that its number of users had increased to 4.5 million. Gab is an American alt-tech microblogging and social networking service known for its far-right userbase. Widely described as a haven for neo-Nazis, racists, white supremacists, white nationalists, antisemites, the alt-right, supporters of Donald Trump, conservatives, right-libertarians, and believers in conspiracy theories such as QAnon, Gab has attracted users and groups who have been banned from other social media platforms and users seeking alternatives to mainstream social media platforms. LBRY (), is a blockchain-based file-sharing and payment network that powers decentralized platforms, primarily social networks and video platforms. LBRY's creators also created Odysee, an open-source video-sharing website that uses the network, and that was split into a separate company on October 1, 2021. Video platforms built on LBRY, such as Odysee, have been described as decentralized alternatives to YouTube. The cloud services business is known for hosting Truth Social, and the video platform is popular among American right and far-right users. The platform has been described as part of "alt-tech".
