The Detectives (1959 TV Series)
''The Detectives'' (also known as ''The Detectives Starring Robert Taylor'', ''Captain of Detectives'', and ''Robert Taylor's Detectives'') is an American crime drama series which ran on ABC during its first two seasons (sponsored by Procter & Gamble), and on NBC during its third and final season. The series, starring motion picture star Robert Taylor, was produced by Four Star Television in association with Levy-Gardner-Laven Productions. Synopsis Taylor stars as Detective Captain Matt Holbrook, the tough, no-nonsense head of an elite police investigative unit in a major U.S. city. Ostensibly, each man in Holbrook's hand-picked squad of detectives came from a different division. Lt. Johnny Russo ( Tige Andrews) was from burglary, Lt. Jim Conway ( Lee Farr) came from homicide, and Lt. Otto Lindstrom ( Russell Thorson) was from the bunco squad. Robert Taylor (American Actor)
Robert Taylor (born Spangler Arlington Brugh; August 5, 1911 – June 8, 1969) was an American film and television actor and singer who was one of the most popular leading men of his era. Taylor began his career in films in 1934 when he signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He won his first leading role the following year in ''Magnificent Obsession (1935 film), Magnificent Obsession''. His popularity increased during the late 1930s and 1940s with appearances in ''Camille (1936 film), Camille'' (1936), ''A Yank at Oxford'' (1938), ''Waterloo Bridge (1940 film), Waterloo Bridge'' (1940), and ''Bataan (film), Bataan'' (1943). Lee Farr
Lee Farr (born Leon Farb; April 10, 1927 – March 23, 2017) was an American actor best known for his starring role as Lt. Jimmy Conway in the television series '' The Detectives'' during the 1950s and 1960s. Early years Farr was born Leon Farb in New York on April 10, 1927, to Rose ( Draisin) Farb and Jacob Farb, a photographer. He was raised in Brooklyn and graduated from Boys High School in the borough's Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood. He enlisted in the United States Navy before enrolling at Penn State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in geophysics. While at Penn State, he took some acting courses and acted in school plays. Career Farr began his career as a geologist before transitioning to acting. He appeared in ''The Detectives'' first season. Four Star Television, also called Four Star International, was an American television production company. Levy-Gardner-Laven Productions was an American film production company based in Beverly Hills, California. The principals, Jules V. Levy, Arthur Gardner, and Arnold Laven, met while serving in the Air Force's First Motion Picture Unit during World War II. While serving, they decided to form their own production company after the war ended. The three men formed Levy-Gardner-Laven in 1951. Production Levy-Gardner-Laven's first production was the 1952 low-budget crime thriller film ''Without Warning!''. Laven produced both films and television shows, and he directed many popular American television shows, including episodes of ''The A-Team'', ''CHiPs'', ''Mannix'', ''The Big Valley'', ''The Greatest American Hero'' and ''Hill Street Blues''.
