The Death Of Chevalier Bayard
''The Death of Chevalier Bayard'' is a 1772 history painting by the Anglo-American artist Benjamin West. It depicts the death of Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard at the Battle of the Sesia in Italy in 1524.Millar p.121 Fatally wounded he had urged his retreating French soldiers to abandon him. He is show receiving the homage of his enemies, the troops of Charles V.McNairn p.176 It was one of a number of commissions West received from George III. Along with other neoclassical works, it was produced for a sitting room at Buckingham Palace. West received three hundred guineas for producing this and its pendant piece ''The Death of Epaminondas'' which also deals with courageous, stoic acceptance of a noble death. These vertical paintings were designed to flank his celebrated ''The Death of General Wolfe''. Benjamin West
Benjamin West (October 10, 1738 – March 11, 1820) was a British-American artist who painted famous historical scenes such as ''The Death of Nelson (West painting), The Death of Nelson'', ''The Death of General Wolfe'', the ''Treaty of Paris (painting), Treaty of Paris'', and ''Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky''. Entirely self-taught, West soon gained valuable patronage and toured Europe, eventually settling in London. Lieutenant-General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm-Gozon, Marquis de Montcalm de Saint-Veran (; 28 February 1712 – 14 September 1759) was a French Royal Army officer best known for his unsuccessful defence of New France during the French and Indian War. Montcalm was born in Vestric-et-Candiac near Nîmes to an aristocratic family, and joined the French army at a young age. He served in the War of the Polish Succession and the War of the Austrian Succession, where his service resulted in a promotion to brigadier general.
