''The City of Marvels'' () is a 1999 epic historical drama film directed by Mario Camus and co-written by Gustau Hernández, Esther Cases, and Olivier Ollin based on the novel '' The City of Marvels'' by Eduardo Mendoza. It stars Olivier Martinez and Emma Suárez. Plot Set in early 20th-century Barcelona, in the period in between the 1888 and 1929 Expos, the plot tracks the social climbing of ambitious Onofre Bouvila. Cast Production The film is a Spanish-French-Portuguese co-production of ICC with Tanaïs COM, France 3 Cinéma, SEP Cinéma, Continental Filmes, and RTP. Mario Camus García (20 April 1935 – 18 September 2021) was a Spanish film director and screenwriter. He won the Golden Bear at the 33rd Berlin International Film Festival with '' La colmena''. His 1987 film '' The House of Bernarda Alba'' was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival and in the main competition at the 15th Moscow International Film Festival. Montserrat Carulla i Ventura (19 September 1930 – 24 November 2020) was a Spanish actress. Career Coming from the amateur theatre, she completed her training with courses at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona (Barcelona Theatre Institute) at the end of the 1940s. Reyes Abades
Reyes Abades (25 July 1949 – 1 February 2018) was a Spanish specialist in special effects. He won nine Goya Awards. Abades worked on more than 300 productions. He contributed to the opening and closing ceremonies for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. He died of a heart attack at age 68.
