Virginia Capes
The Virginia Capes are the two capes, Cape Charles to the north and Cape Henry to the south, that define the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay on the eastern coast of North America. The importance of the Chesapeake Bay in American history has long made the Virginia Capes strategically significant, most notably in the naval Battle of the Chesapeake that was crucial to the American victory at the siege of Yorktown, effectively ending the American Revolutionary War. As a result, the area was heavily garrisoned, beginning with the construction of Fort Monroe and Fort Wool in 1819. During the American Civil War, a pivotal battle between the ironclad warships and was fought in Hampton Roads. The ''Virginia'' was attempting to break the Union blockade that was strangling the Confederacy. During World War I, additional gun batteries were installed on Cape Henry at Fort Story and on Fisherman's Island near Cape Charles. During World War II, the coast artillery batteries at Fort St ...

The Capes (band)
The Capes was a five-piece indie rock band from South London. Their hook-laden music drew comparisons to britpop, in particular Blur. Biography The band formed in 2002 when singer/guitarist Kris Barratt, keyboard player Richard Gladman, bass guitarist Rupert Cresswell and drummer Rupert Phelps began rehearsing together at South London's Goldsmiths College. Rupert Cresswell's brother Nick was soon brought in as an extra guitar and keyboard player, thus completing the current line-up of the band. Hard Soul Records, an American label, released the band's debut EP ''Taste'' in 2005. This was followed in early 2006 by the Capes' first album, ''Hello''. Despite two American tours, an appearance at SXSW, and favourable reviews by online publications such as Pitchfork Media and Cokemachineglow, by late 2006 the band had parted ways with Hard Soul. This was in part due to a general lack of support from the label, who, amongst other things, left the band stranded in Athens, Georgia at ...

Surfing Locations In The Capes Region Of South West Western Australia
Many surfing locations are found along the coast of the Capes Region in Western Australia. The Capes Region, also known as ''Cape to Cape'', is situated between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, within a larger region known as the South West. Despite their wide geographic range, most surf breaks in the Capes Region tend to be associated with Margaret River, situated roughly central to the stretch of coast along which they are located. Context Surfing in this region was well-established in the 1970s, with a 1970 government mapping guide to the region identifying surfing locations. By the 1990s, the names of the individual breaks were so well-established that online and print published guides were able to locate and identify the behaviours of the breaks. The surfing culture of the region is well-embedded in the communities along the coast. The roads named below run off Caves Road, the main western route between Dunsborough and Augusta. The identification of nearby roads doe ...

Battle Of The Capes
The Battle of the Chesapeake, also known as the Battle of the Virginia Capes or simply the Battle of the Capes, was a crucial naval battle in the American Revolutionary War that took place near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay on 5 September 1781. The combatants were a British fleet led by Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Graves and a French fleet led by Rear Admiral François Joseph Paul, the Comte de Grasse. The battle was strategically decisive, in that it prevented the Royal Navy from reinforcing or evacuating the besieged forces of Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia. The French were able to achieve control of the sea lanes against the British and provided the Franco-American army with siege artillery and French reinforcements. These proved decisive in the Siege of Yorktown, effectively securing independence for the Thirteen Colonies. Admiral de Grasse had the option to attack British forces in either New York or Virginia; he opted for Virginia, arriving at ...
