The Big Sail
The Big Sail is the name given to the annual exhibition sailing contest between the University of California, Berkeley Club Sailing Team and the Stanford Cardinal Sailing Team. The regatta is held annually on the Tuesday or Wednesday preceding The Big Game, at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California. As of 2024, the regatta consists of five divisions per school, each with its own boat: Varsity (current undergraduate sailors), Alumni, Masters (40+ years old), Grandmasters (60+ years old), and Women's. The boats used are matched J/22 keelboats supplied by St. Francis Yacht Club. The racing consists of two-versus-two team racing, with the team pairings rotating through the five divisions. The Stanford Cardinal are the college athletics in the United States, athletic teams that represent Stanford University. Big Game (American Football)
The Big Game is the name given to the California–Stanford football rivalry. It is an American college football rivalry game played by the California Golden Bears football team of the University of California, Berkeley, and the Stanford Cardinal football team of Stanford University. Both institutions are located in the San Francisco Bay Area. First played in 1892, it remains one of the oldest college rivalries in the United States. The game is usually played in late November or early December and its location alternates between the two universities every year. Team Racing
Team Racing was a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team. It was owned by former driver Phil Bonifield. The team fielded multiple trucks, usually with sponsorship from Red Line Oil and the Coverall Carports. Truck No. 23 history Team Racing made its debut in 1999 at Evergreen Speedway, under the banner Team 23 Racing. Bonifield qualified the No. 23 truck 29th but finished 30th after suffering fuel pump failure early in the race. Jerry Kobza ran the truck two races later at Memphis Motorsports Park, but dropped out early due to engine failure. Bonifield ran the truck for most of the year, posting thirteen more starts and a best finish of 30th twice, finishing 31st in points. J/105
The International J/105 is a fixed keel one design racing sailboat. It was the first production boat featuring a retractable bowsprit, which allows for an unusually large asymmetrical spinnaker. It was introduced in 1991 by J/Boats and designed by Rod Johnstone. J/105s are a common sight in one design racing and to date, J/Boats has built 685 J/105s. The J/105 is regarded as a fast design with a clean deck layout. It was selected as the 1992 "Boat of the Year" in the Racer/Cruiser category by Sailing World Magazine. One-design racing is a racing method which may be adopted in sports using complex equipment, whereby all vehicles have identical or very similar designs or models, avoiding the need for a Handicapping, handicap system. A match race is a race between two competitors, going head-to-head. Stanford Axe
The Stanford Axe is a trophy awarded to the winner of the annual Big Game, a college football match-up between the University of California, Berkeley Golden Bears and the Stanford Cardinal. The trophy consists of an axe-head mounted on a large wooden plaque, along with the scores of past Big Games. Cal currently holds the Axe after defeating Stanford 24–21 in the 2024 game.
