John Lydon
John Joseph Lydon ( ; born 31 January 1956), also known by his former stage name Johnny Rotten, is a British-born singer, songwriter, author, and television personality. He was the lead vocalist of the punk rock band the Sex Pistols, which was active from 1975 to 1978, and again for various revivals during the 1990s and 2000s. He is also the lead vocalist of post-punk band Public Image Ltd (PiL), which he founded and fronted from 1978 until 1993, and again since 2009. Lydon's outspoken personality, rebellious image and fashion style convinced Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren to invite Lydon to join the group as its lead vocalist. With the Sex Pistols, he co-wrote singles including " Anarchy in the U.K.", " God Save the Queen", and " Holidays in the Sun", the content of which precipitated what one commentator described as the "last and greatest outbreak of pop-based moral pandemonium" in Britain. Death Disco
"Death Disco" is a song by Public Image Ltd. The record was released in both 7" and 12" single formats with a "½ Mix" of the song and "Megga mix" (an instrumental version of "Fodderstompf" from '' Public Image: First Issue'') on the 12" version. It reached number twenty on the UK Singles Chart. The song was released in an alternative shorter version as "Swan Lake" on the group's second album, ''Metal Box'', with slight changes at the end. The title change reflects the quote from Tchaikovsky's ballet score that surfaces in Keith Levene's guitar part. In his autobiography, '' Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs'', Lydon stated that the song was written for his mother, who had died of cancer not long before. "I watched her die," he told '' Select'' in 1990. "She was tough, my mum. She asked me to write a disco song for her funeral. This was hardly happy stuff." "Pretty Vacant" is a song by the English punk rock band the Sex Pistols. It was released on 1 July 1977 as the band's third single and was later featured on their only album, '' Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols'', released during that same year. Vocalist John Lydon's phrasing of the word "vacant", by emphasising its last syllable to sound like the vulgar word ''cunt'', has given the song a controversial reputation. Composition According to bassist Glen Matlock, the song's main riff was inspired by hearing "SOS" by ABBA. A reversed variant of this riff can be heard in " I'm So Bored With The U.S.A." by The Clash, recorded one month later but released three months earlier than the Sex Pistols record.
