The Beautiful Cheat (1926 Film)
''The Beautiful Cheat'' is a 1926 American silent film, silent comedy film directed by Edward Sloman and starring Laura La Plante, Alexander Carr, and Harry Myers. Plot As described in a film magazine review, motion picture studio magnate has press agent Jimmy Austin take pretty shop clerk Mary Callahan abroad where she is transformed using publicity methods into the Russian actress Maritza Callahansky, who is advertised as having the crown jewels. Returning to the United States, the publicity game continues. Maritza throws a party at a Long Island mansion while the rightful owner is absent. However, the owner's unexpected sudden return causes momentary confusion, but the situation is straightened out by the son of the family, who has joined the film acting brigade. Edward Sloman (19 July 1883, London - 29 September 1972, Woodland Hills, California) was an England, English silent film Film director, director, actor, screenwriter and radio broadcaster. He directed over 100 films and starred in over 30 films as an actor between 1913 in film, 1913 and 1938 in film, 1938. Post-cinema work After directing over 100 films and starring in over 30, Sloman made his last film in 1938 in film, 1938 and in 1939 in film, 1939 left the film industry to enter radio broadcasting as a writer, producer and director. Unfortunately the majority of Sloman's works have been lost. However, his 1927 Universal silent ''Alias the Deacon (1927 film), Alias the Deacon'' starring Jean Hersholt is held by the Library of Congress. Helen Dunbar (born Katheryn Burke Lackey; October 10, 1863 – August 28, 1933) was an American theatrical performer and silent film actress. Career Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dunbar first appeared with the Weber & Fields Stock Company, when it began its career on the New York stage. In 1899 she appeared in ''Whirl-i-gig'' and ''The Other Way'' at the Weber and Fields' Broadway Music Hall. She also worked with the Charles Dillingham Company and the Boston Opera Company. She appeared in motion pictures beginning in 1912 and continued until 1926. Her stage and screen career extended over thirty-five years. Dunbar's film career started with ''Out of the Depths'' (1912). The production starred Francis X. Bushman. She became a leading lady for the old Essanay Studios. Leo White (November 10, 1873 – September 20, 1948), was a German-born British-American film and stage actor who appeared as a character actor in many Charlie Chaplin films. Biography Born in Germany to Julius White and Ida Berg White, White grew up in England where he began his stage career. He was brought to the United States under the aegis of Daniel Frohman, a Broadway producer. He started his film career in 1911 and in 1913 moved to the Essanay Studios. In 1915, he began appearing in Chaplin's comedies and continued through Chaplin's Mutual Film comedies. His last appearance in a Chaplin film was a small role in '' The Great Dictator'', released in 1940. White also acted in and directed '' Triple Trouble'' (1918), Essanay's last Chaplin release.
