The baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist is a major event in the life of Jesus which is described in the three synoptic Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark and Luke). It is considered to have taken place at Al-Maghtas (also called Bethany Beyond the Jordan), today located in Jordan. Modern biblical scholars view the baptism of Jesus as a historical event to which a high degree of certainty can be assigned. The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, or Theophany, is the feast day commemorating the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. Originally the baptism of Christ was celebrated on Epiphany, which commemorates the coming of the Magi, the baptism of Christ, and the wedding at Cana. Over time in the West, however, the celebration of the baptism of the Lord came to be commemorated as a distinct feast from Epiphany. ''The Baptism of Christ'' is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesca. Painted in egg tempera on two panels of poplar wood, the dating is controversial – some give it a very early date, perhaps 1439; others much later, around 1460. It is held by the National Gallery, London. The panel was commissioned presumably some time about 1440 by the Camaldolese Monastery of Sansepolcro in Tuscany, now Sansepolcro Cathedral. Sansepolcro was the town the birthplace of Piero della Francesca. The town depicted in the middle distance in the painting, to Christ's left, may be Sansepolcro. The ''Baptism of Christ'' is a painting finished around 1475 in the studio of the Italian Renaissance painter Andrea del Verrocchio and generally ascribed to him and his pupil Leonardo da Vinci. Some art historians discern the hands of other members of Verrocchio's workshop in the painting as well. The picture depicts the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist as recorded in the Biblical Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. The angel to the left is recorded as having been painted by the youthful Leonardo, a fact which has excited so much special comment and mythology, that the importance and value of the picture as a whole and within the œuvre of Verrocchio is often overlooked. The ''Baptism of Christ'' is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Pietro Perugino and his workshop, executed around 1482 and located in the Sistine Chapel, Rome. History The commission of the work originated in 1480, when Perugino was decorating a chapel in the Old St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Pope Sixtus IV was pleased by his work, and decided to commission him also the decoration of the new Chapel he had built in the Vatican Palace. ''Baptism of Christ'' is a c.1510 painting of the Baptism of Christ by Pietro Perugino. He produced it for the chapel of St John the Baptist in Città della Pieve Cathedral, where it still hangs. Unusually for a depiction of this subject, it does not show the face of God the Father. A multi-coloured marble frame was added in the Baroque period and a copy of Perugino's self-portrait now hangs another wall in the chapel. It was restored in 1821 by Colarieti Tosti, in 1962 by Giovanni Mancini and finally in 2010. ''The Baptism of Christ'' or the ''Jan des Trompes Triptych'' is an altarpiece painted between 1502 and 1508 by the Flemish painter Gerard David. It is now in the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, Belgium. Description Its central panel is 127.9 cm high by 96.6 cm wide and shows Christ's baptism in the Jordan, with an angel holding Christ's clothing and God the Father and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove above Christ. ''The Baptism of Christ'' is a casein tempera and gold on canvas painting measuring 176cm x 230cm and dating to around 1506. It and '' The Holy Family and the Family of Saint John the Baptist'' were painted by Andrea Mantegna for his funerary chapel at the Basilica of Sant'Andrea, Mantua - the chapel was dedicated to John the Baptist, hence the choice of subjects. They were both found in his studio after his death by his son Francesco and placed in the chapel, where they still hang. ''Baptism'' is incomplete and was probably worked up by Francesco, a less-skilled artist - the colour on the mantle of the unknown character on the right may be his work. ''Baptism of Christ'' is a 1608–1614 painting by El Greco, made towards the end of his life in Toledo and completed by his son Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli. It is now in the Hospital de Tavera in Toledo. Description The work was produced almost entirely by Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli, El Greco's son. Jesus appears kneeling while Saint John the Baptist at right pours water onto his head from a conch. In the upper, God the Father and the dove of the Holy Spirit are painted to unite the figures of the Holy Trinity. The strong lighting recalls the work of Michelangelo. This large canvas was delivered to the Tavera Hospital shortly before 1624, the date on which it was already included in the inventory of this institution. It is likely that it was designed to be placed in the main altarpiece, in the central niche of the lower floor, which has the appropriate measurements.
