The Bamboos are an Australian funk and Soul music, soul band from Melbourne. Biography 2000–2005: Formation and early releases The Bamboos were formed in 2000 in Melbourne, Australia by New Zealand-born producer/guitarist/songwriter, Lance Ferguson. The initial line-up consisted of Ferguson, Ben Grayson on Hammond organ, Stuart Speed on bass and Scott Lambie on drums. The band's first live performances were at The Night Cat in Fitzroy, Victoria, where over an evening they would play three sets of instrumental material drawn from artists such as The Meters, James Brown, Grant Green, Boogaloo Joe Jones, Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones and Reuben Wilson. In 2001 The Bamboos released their debut 7" single containing the original songs "Eel Oil" and "Blackfoot", earning them international acclaim from UK Deep Funk DJs Keb Darge, Snowboy, Mr Scruff, Patrick Forge and Russ Dewbury.. Kylie Auldist
Kylie Auldist (born 18 September 1968) is an Australian singer, best known as the singer of the Bamboos and Cookin' on 3 Burners. She has also released five solo albums. Career Auldist recorded her first song at the age of six. She is half Samoan. She moved from Broken Hill to Melbourne to pursue a career as a singer. She performed as a backing singer both live and on studio recordings with Renee Geyer and Jimmy Barnes. She also worked with the groups Curtis Late, Secret Masters, Small Fish Deep Sea, and Megabias, as well as Polyester, whose guitarist, Lance Ferguson, also played with funk group the Bamboos. She officially joined The Bamboos in 2006, debuting on stage at Meredith Music Festival in a late night set. In 2008 she travelled with the band to the UK, where she was immediately signed to Brighton record label Tru Thoughts. Funk is a music genre that originated in African-American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African-Americans in the mid-20th century. It deemphasizes melody and chord progressions and focuses on a strong rhythmic groove (music), groove of a bassline played by an electric bassist and a drum part played by a drum kit, percussionist, often at slower tempos than other popular music. Funk typically consists of a complex percussive groove with Rhythm section, rhythm instruments playing interlocking grooves that create a "hypnotic" and "danceable" feel. It uses the same richly colored extended chords found in bebop jazz, such as minor chords with added sevenths and elevenths, and dominant seventh chords with altered ninths and thirteenths.
