A criminal charge is a formal accusation made by a governmental authority (usually a public prosecutor or the police) asserting that somebody has committed a crime. A charging document, which contains one or more criminal charges or counts, can take several forms, including: * complaint * information * indictment * citation * traffic ticket The charging document is what generally starts a criminal case in court. But the procedure by which somebody is charged with a crime and what happens when somebody has been charged varies from country to country and even sometimes within a country. Before a person is found guilty of a crime, a criminal charge must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Punishment There can be multiple punishments due to certain criminal charges. ''The Accused'' is a 1949 American drama film starring Loretta Young and Robert Cummings. It was directed by William Dieterle, produced by Hal Wallis, and written by Ketti Frings, based on ''Be Still, My Love'', a 1947 novel written by June Truesdell. Wendell Corey appears in principal support. Plot Wilma Tuttle (Young) is a college professor who unintentionally arouses the sexual interest of her student Bill Perry (Douglas Dick). When Perry tries to rape Tuttle, she accidentally beats him to death with an auto part. She covers up her crime by making it seem as though Perry was killed while diving into the sea from a precipitous cliff. The show was cancelled at the end of its first season. Suspect
In law enforcement jargon, a suspect is a known person accused or suspected of committing a crime. Police and reporters in the United States often use the word suspect as a jargon when referring to the perpetrator of the offense (perp in dated U.S. slang). However, in official definition, the perpetrator is the robber, assailant, counterfeiter, etc.—the person who committed the crime. The distinction between suspect and perpetrator recognizes that the suspect is not ''known'' to have committed the offense, while the perpetrator—who may not yet have been suspected of the crime, and is thus not necessarily a suspect—is the one who did. The suspect may be a different person from the perpetrator, or there may have been no actual crime, which would mean there is no perpetrator.
