Tennessee Chairs Of Excellence
The Tennessee Chairs of Excellence program was established during a period of educational reform in 1984, under Governor Lamar Alexander's "Better Schools" Program. While most of that program focused on improvements to K-12 education, some money went to higher education: increases to general funding, the Chairs of Excellence program, and the Centers of Excellence program. The purpose of the Chairs of Excellence program was to attract and retain nationally (or regionally) recognized scholars to four-year academic institutions within the state. In theory, this would attract private funding to the state, improve research initiatives, improve the quality of higher education for undergraduate and graduate students, and raise the state's national and international educational standing, hence increasing the schools' global competitiveness. Lamar Alexander
Andrew Lamar Alexander Jr. (born July 3, 1940) is an American politician and attorney who served as a United States senator from Tennessee from 2003 to 2021. A member of the Republican Party, he also was the 45th governor of Tennessee from 1979 to 1987 and the 5th United States secretary of education from 1991 to 1993, where he helped with the implementation of Education 2000. He is the most recent governor of Tennessee to not be, or never have been, a businessman. Born in Maryville, Tennessee, Alexander graduated from Vanderbilt University and the New York University School of Law. After establishing a legal career in Nashville, Tennessee, Alexander ran for Governor of Tennessee in 1974, but was defeated by Democrat Ray Blanton. The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) is a satellite campus of the University of Tennessee located near Tullahoma, Tennessee. UTSI was founded to allow students to take advantage of the aerospace facilities located in the Arnold Engineering Development Center on Arnold Air Force Base, including wind tunnels and other laboratory equipment. The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) was established by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1967 to coordinate and support the efforts of higher education institutions in the State of Tennessee. One of its statutory requirements is to create a master plan for developing public higher education in Tennessee.
