''Tenebrosternarchus'' is a monospecific genus of weakly electric fish, weakly electric Apteronotidae, knifefish in the family (biology), family Apteronotidae. The only species in the genus is ''Tenebrosternarchus preto''. It is native to large river channels and major side branches in the Amazon Basin, and is common in the Tefé River and the Rio Solimões to a depth of . It is found in both Whitewater river (river type), whitewater and blackwater river, blackwater habitats. The species name ''preto'' comes from the Portuguese word for "black", referring to its coloration. Prior to 2020, it was placed in the genus ''Sternarchogiton''. ''Sternarchogiton'' is a genus of weakly electric knifefish in the family Apteronotidae, all living in the main channel of large rivers in the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. They have a blunt snout and depending on the exact species reach up to in total length. The adult males of ''S. nattereri'' have teeth on the outside of the jaw, believed to be used in fights with other males, and it was formerly placed in its own genus because of this unique feature.
