In archaeology, a tell (from , ', 'mound' or 'small hill') is an artificial topographical feature, a mound consisting of the accumulated and stratified debris of a succession of consecutive settlements at the same site, the refuse of generations of people who built and inhabited them and natural sediment. Tells are most commonly associated with the ancient Near East but are also found elsewhere, such as in Southern Europe, Southern and parts of Central Europe, from Greece and Bulgaria to Hungary and Spain,, see map. and in North Africa. In the 1990s, the effort to rebuild Beirut following the Lebanese Civil War provided archaeologists with the unique opportunity to investigate the Tell, revealing many layers of the city. History Around 2500 B.C., Canaanite ''Biruta'' was a small town, overlooking a natural bay where ships sought shelter. Local and foreign goods were traded, while the ships renewed their supplies. Between 1200 and 1000 B.C., Phoenician Beirut/Biruta regained its role as a maritime center, and established two harbors and extended trade links throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. Tell City is a city in and the county seat of Troy Township, Perry County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is located along the Ohio River. The population was 7,506 at the 2020 census. History Tell City traces its 150+ year old roots to a meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio in November 1856. A group of Swiss-German immigrants met in Cincinnati to organize a society known as the "Swiss Colonization Society." The society's purpose was to obtain affordable homesteads for mechanics, shopkeepers, factory workers, and small farmers in a location where all could live in harmony. The Society decided to purchase a tract of land three miles (5 km) square to be surveyed as a city plot. Tell is an unincorporated community in southwestern Childress County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 15 in 2000. History 1887 saw the founding of Tell. Tell-Tale Flat was the subsequent name after Lee. Belle Garrison, the postmistress, opened the first post office in her dugout home in 1888. Federal postal officials abbreviated the name to Tell in 1905. The following year, Jim Fox had a grocery and drugstore, R. A. Hawkins constructed the first cotton gin, and Richard A. Sandifer operated a general store. Four churches and numerous other businesses had been founded by 1916. The Tell State Bank was in operation from 1916 to 1934, when it amalgamated with the Childress State Bank.
