Television in Egypt is mainly received through free satellite, while analog terrestrial represents 41% of total viewers. The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics said the average time an Egyptian spends watching television a day is 180 minutes (3 hours), while Egyptian channels recorded 170,000 hours of broadcast in 2019. Since Egypt launched its first broadcasts in 1960, state-run channels have held a monopoly on terrestrial broadcast. The Ministry of Information strictly regulated private satellite channels as well. The Egyptian Radio and Television Union, a government entity, owns all 17 terrestrial channels. Channel 1 and Channel 2 are the network’s main channels and broadcast across Egypt. The state-owned Nile TV is the main foreign language channel, aims at promoting Egypt's state point of view and promote tourism. An Arab television drama or Arab soap opera (also known as musalsal (), plural musalsalat ()) is a television form of melodramatic serialized fiction. The musalsalat are similar in style to Latin American telenovelas. They are often historical epics about Islamic figures or love stories involving class conflict and intrigue. The word ''musalsal'' literally means "chained, continuous". During the evenings of the month of Ramadan, after the Iftar meal is eaten to break the day's fast, families across much of the Arab world watch these special dramas on television. MBC Drama () is a free-to-air pan-Arab television channel owned by MBC Group. It was launched on 27 November 2010 with 24/7 Arabic drama series. The channel runs a variety of different dramas: Egyptian, Iraqi, Lebanese, Levantine, Syrian, Bedouin and Gulf dramas that are first and exclusive runs. MBC Drama is distinguished by the two additional repeats throughout the day. MBC 1 has secured a deal to show 32 Indian movies after its initial broadcast of ''Jodhaa Akbar'', which was a huge success and was appreciated by the public as well as the advertisers. This, however, ended up on MBC 1 and MBC Drama instead, due to tying in the Bollywood films as part of the dubbed films package so that these films can be watched by the Arab audience as well.
