Ted Thomas (judge)
Sir Edmund Walter Thomas (born 1934), widely known as Ted Thomas, is a New Zealand jurist. He is a retired judge of the Court of Appeal of New Zealand and a former acting judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. Biography Thomas was educated at Feilding Agricultural High School and Victoria University College graduating with a BA and LLB in 1956, and the higher doctorate LLD in 2009. He was admitted to the bar as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court (later the High Court) of New Zealand. Following many years as a partner at New Zealand law firm Russell McVeagh, he became a barrister sole and was appointed a QC in 1981. In 1989 and 1990, he was President of the New Zealand Bar Association, and in 1990 he was appointed to the bench of the High Court of New Zealand. In 1995 he was elevated to the Court of Appeal. Ted Thomas (footballer, Born 1898)
Edward Hazen Thomas (9 August 1898 – 8 May 1965) was an Australian rules football player at the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). In 1926, he became one of the club's premiership players, under the auspices of captain-coach Albert Chadwick. Thomas made his debut against in round 1 of the 1921 VFL season, at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground. He has been given the Melbourne Heritage Number of 385, based on the order of his debut for the club. Originally from Oakleigh Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), he returned there for the 1929, 1930 and 1931 seasons before returning to Melbourne for a final season in the VFL. His grandson, Leon Baker Leon Baker (born 17 August 1956) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) during the 1980s. Charles Edward Thomas (30 December 1927 – 14 January 2023) was a Church of England priest, most notably Archdeacon of Wells from 1983 to 1993. Thomas was educated at St David's College, Lampeter and the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield. He was ordained deacon in 1953, and priest in 1954. After a curacy in Ilminster he was Chaplain of St Michael's College, Tenbury. After another curacy in St Albans he was Vicar of St Michael and All Angels, Boreham Wood from 1958 to 1966. He was Rector of Monksilver from 1966 to 1974; then Vicar of South Petherton South Petherton is a village and civil parish in the South Somerset district of Somerset, England, located east of Ilminster and north of Crewkerne. Evan David "Ted" Thomas (23 July 1894 – March 1943), listed as Edward Thomas in another source, was a South Australian rower. He was a three-time national champion who represented Australia at the 1924 Summer Olympics in the men's eight. Club and state rowing Ted Thomas was a storekeeper and his senior rowing was from the Murray Bridge Rowing Club. The Murray Bridge Rowing Club men's eight was the dominant Australian club eight of the 1920s. They won the South Australian state championship from 1920 to 1923 and in 1921 by a margin of ten lengths. For the four years from 1920 to 1923 they were selected in-toto as the South Australian men's eight to contest the King's Cup at the Australian Interstate Regatta. Teddy Thomas (born 18 September 1993) is a French international rugby union player who plays on the wing for La Rochelle in the Top 14. Early life Thomas was raised by his French mother. His father was from Mali, played professional football in France, but disappeared before Thomas' birth. Thomas chose to use his middle name as his surname. Thomas was encouraged to play rugby by his grandfather and uncle. Career Club Thomas began his professional rugby career in 2012 playing for Biarritz Olympique during the 2012–13 Top 14 season. Edwin "Guboo" Ted Thomas (29 January 1909 – 19 May 2002), a Yuin man, was a prominent Aboriginal leader. He toured Australia with a gumleaf orchestra during the Great Depression of the 1930s, played rugby league and became a respected elder who campaigned for protection of sacred sites on the South Coast. He went to the United Nations in New York and urged the World Council of Churches to accept Indigenous religions, and also met the Dalai Lama. Early life Guboo Ted Thomas was born in 1909 under a gum tree at Jembaicumbene in the Braidwood area of the South Coast of New South Wales. He was born into the Yuin people, which he always maintained was a Nation made up of many individual tribes.
