Sámi University of Applied Sciences (, ) is a university that is located in the village of Kautokeino in Kautokeino Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. It was established in 1989 and has about 200 students and 110 faculty, technical and administrative staff. It is one of 25 Norwegian state university colleges. Since 2009 it has been located at the campus complex of Diehtosiida. Sámi University of Applied Sciences has a national responsibility for Sámi higher education, including education within teaching and journalism. The college attempts to develop its syllabi on the basis of Sámi needs, and attempts to develop Sámi as an academic language. The college has students from all four countries covered by Sápmi. ''Sámi Áigi'' was a Northern Sámi-language weekly newspaper established in 1978, providing an alternative to the Norwegian-language Sámi publication ''Ságat''. ''Sámi Áigi'' played a prominent role in building and empowering Sámi identity during the Alta controversy and throughout the 1980s. History was launched with the backing of the Norwegian Sámi Association, Norwegian Reindeer Husbandry Association, and the Saami Council to build connections among the Sámi of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The new paper was based in Kárášjohka, Norway, but had readers across Sápmi. The development of a pan-Scandinavian Northern Sámi orthography gave additional relevancy to the new newspaper. Per Isak Nikolaus Juuso, born 1 May 1953 in Karesuando parish, Norrbotten County, Sweden, is a Swedish-Sámi artisan and teacher. Biography Per Isak Juuso grew up in Mertajärvi, south of Karesuando. His parents were active reindeer herders and he learned to be an artisan from them. He trained to become a silversmith, then furthered his education in metal and design, the latter for the textile artist Wanja Djanaieff. He has also studied pedagogy at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences in Kautokeino. Juuso has worked in metal, wood, horn, leather and textiles and has been a leading developer of modern Sámi handicrafts (daidda duodji). Pigga Päivi Kristiina Keskitalo (born 1972, Utsjoki) is a member of the Sámi Parliament of Finland and education researcher at the University of Helsinki, University of Lapland, and the Sámi University. Biography Keskitalo was born in Utsjoki in 1972. She earned her first degree in education in 1997 from the University of Lapland and worked as a teacher. She graduated with a MA in 2008, from the same university. She undertook doctoral research at the University of Lapland and graduated in 2010 with a PhD which explored Sámi cultural sensitivity through educational anthropology. Research Keskitalo researches Sámi education in contemporary and historical settings and has published widely on the subject, including on the history of Sámi education in Norway. Britta Margareta Marakatt-Labba (born 18 September 1951 in Idivuoma, Karesuando, Sweden) is a Swedish Sámi textile artist, painter, graphic artist, and a member of the Máze Group. Early life and education Marakatt-Labba is one of nine children born into a reindeer-herding family. When she was five, her father Johannes Marakatt died, leaving her mother Anna Maria Nutti to raise nine children by herself. She studied at Sunderby Folk High School () from 1971 to 1973. From 1974 to 1978, Marakatt-Labba studied at the Art Industrial School () in Gothenburg, Sweden from which she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Textile Art.
