The Eparchy of Mavelikara is a Syro-Malankara Catholic Church ecclesiastical territory or eparchy of the Catholic Church in India. It is a suffragan eparchy in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archeparchy of Trivandrum. Its episcopal see is Mavelikkara, a taluk and municipality in the southern part of Alappuzha district of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala, on the banks of the Achankovil River. It is the 6th eparchy of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, established on 2007.01.02 on territory formerly belonging to the Metropolitan archeparchies. Joshua Mar Ignathios (born 24 May 1950) was the Eparch of the Eparchy of Mavelikara of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in the state of Kerala, India. He retired as Eparch on 30th May 2025. Family history and childhood He was born at Kottarakara, Kollam district as the son of Oommen Varghese and Annamma Varghese. He had his primary education at the St. Mary's School, Kizhaketheruvu, and he completed his secondary education at the Government High School, Kottarakkara, in 1967. Training and ordination He joined St. Aloysius Seminary, Trivandrum, in 1967, and completed his pre-degree at Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum. He had his philosophy and theology training at St. Joseph's Seminary, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, from 1970–78. Eparchy ( ''eparchía'' "overlordship") is an Ecclesiology, ecclesiastical unit in Eastern Christianity that is equivalent to a diocese in Western Christianity. Achankovil River
Achankovil is a long west flowing river in Kerala, India. It flows through the districts of Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha. The river drains vast tract of fertile plains of Upper Kuttanad in the Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts. It also sustains numerous urban settlements along its course such as Konni, Pathanamthitta, Pandalam and Mavelikkara. Course The river has its origin in Devar Mala peak of the Western Ghats situated in the Konni Reserve Forest. Rivers like Rishimala, Pashukidamettu and Ramakkaltheri form the major tributaries of the Achenkovil river. It flows south west from its origin and enters Kollam district near Achencovil village.
