The Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy of Bathery is an eparchy of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in Sulthan Bathery, in Kerala, India. Aboon Joseph Mar Thomas was the bishop. The seat of the eparchy is at St. Thomas Syro-Malankara Catholic Cathedral in Sulthan Bathery. History The Catholic diocese of Bathery was established in 1978 by Pope John Paul II and was formally inaugurated on 2 February 1979. During the papacy of Benedict XVI the diocese of Bathery was bifurcated and the new diocese of Puttur was erected. This was mainly due to the geographic vastness of the area. there were nearly 25,000 Malankara Catholic faithful in 102 parishes and mission stations in the diocese of Bathery. Geevarghese Mar Divannasios was transferred to the diocese of Puttur and Joseph Mar Thomas appointed as the bishop of Bathery. Eparchy ( ''eparchía'' "overlordship") is an Ecclesiology, ecclesiastical unit in Eastern Christianity that is equivalent to a diocese in Western Christianity. An eparchy is governed by an ''eparch'', who is a bishop. Depending on the administrative structure of a specific Eastern Church, an eparchy can belong to an ecclesiastical province (usually a Metropolis (religious jurisdiction), metropolis), but it can also be exempt. Pope John Paul II
Pope John Paul II (born Karol Józef Wojtyła; 18 May 19202 April 2005) was head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 16 October 1978 until Death and funeral of Pope John Paul II, his death in 2005. Geevarghese Mar Divannasios Ottathengil (1 November 1950 – 16 January 2018) was the bishop of Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy of Puthur from 2010 until 2017. Early life and ministry Geevarghese Mar Divannasios was born Varghese Ottathengil on 1 November 1950 into a Syrian Christian family in Thalavady near Thiruvalla. He was ordained a priest by Benedict Mar Gregorios in 1978. He served as Rector of the Major Seminary of the Malankara Catholic Church and was appointed Bishop of the Eparchy of Bathery by Pope John Paul II in 1996. Moran Mor Cyril Baselios Catholicos or, when referencing his title of Major Archbishop, Cyril Baselios Malancharuvil OIC (born ''James Malancharuvil'', 16 August 1935 –18 January 2007) was the first major archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. Aboon Thomas Mor Koorilos (born 19 October 1958) is the Metropolitan Archbishop of Tiruvalla, Kerala, India. Life and career He was born to Chakkalapadikkal Ninan Varghese and Aleyamma.
