The Syrian Desert campaign was a campaign waged by the Syrian Arab Armed Forces forces and their allies, including Iran and Russia, against the remaining forces of the Islamic State in the Syrian Desert region. Background Following a series of campaigns between 2016 and 2017 by the Syrian government and allied forces, the American-led CJTF-OIR coalition and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Turkey and its supporting rebels, the remnants of the Islamic State's forces west of the Euphrates River withdrew into a large pocket in the Syrian Desert, stretching between the western Homs Governorate and the eastern Deir ez-Zor Governorate, from where they utilized guerrilla tactics to target pro-government forces. Palestine Liberation Army
The Palestine Liberation Army (PLA; ) is ostensibly the military wing of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), set up at the 1964 Arab League summit held in Alexandria, Egypt, with the mission of fighting Israel. The 14th Special Forces Division () was a division of the Syrian Armed Forces specializing in light infantry operations. The Division was part of the Syrian Army's 2nd Corps. Role Syrians used the term "Special Forces" to describe the 14th, 15th divisions, as well as the independent 'special forces' regiments, but they more closely resembled conventional light infantry units than Western Special Forces in both mission and composition. The 2nd Corps () was a corps of the Syrian Army that was first formed in 1985. Richard Bennett wrote in 2001 that "three corps ereformed in 1985 to give the Army more flexibility and to improve combat efficiency by decentralising the command structure, absorbing at least some of the lessons learned during the 1982 Lebanon War." The 25th Special Mission Forces Division, colloquially known by their former name Tiger Forces (; ''Quwwat al-Nimr''), was an elite special forces unit, that was part of the Syrian Army under the charge of the commander Major General Saleh Abdullah. The Syrian Republican Guard (SRG), also known as the Presidential Guard, is the security unit in the Syrian Army. Prior to the fall of the Assad regime, it reportedly consisted of 60,000 guardsmen. Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba (The Nujaba Movement or HHN; ), officially the 12th Brigade, is a radical Iraqi Shi'ite paramilitary group that is especially active in Iraq and formerly in Ba'athist Syria. The 4th Armoured Division () was an elite formation (military), formation of the Syrian Arab Army whose primary purpose was to defend Ba'athist Syria from internal and external threats. The Syrian Army is the land force branch of the Syrian Armed Forces. The Syrian Arab Armed Forces (SAAF; ) were the combined armed forces of Syria from 1963 to 2024. They served during the rule of the Ba'ath Party in Syria.
