Swindon () is a town and unitary authority with borough status in Wiltshire, England. As of the 2021 Census, the population of Swindon was 201,669, making it the largest town in the county. The Swindon unitary authority area had a population of 233,410 as of 2021. Located in South West England, the town lies between Bristol, 35 miles (56 kilometres) to its west, and Reading, equidistant to its east. Recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as ''Suindune'', it was a small market town until the mid-19th century, when it was selected as the principal site for the Great Western Railway's repair and maintenance works, leading to a marked increase in its population. The new town constructed for the railway workers produced forward-looking amenities such as the UK’s first lending library and a ‘cradle-to-grave' health care centre that was later used as a blueprint for the NHS. Harry Morris (footballer, Born 1897)
David Hyman Morris (25 November 1897 – 1 December 1985), known as Harry Morris or Abe Morris, was an English professional football forward and coach, best remembered for his seven-year spell in the Football League with Swindon Town. Morris was voted Swindon Town's greatest-ever player by the club's supporters in 2013 and holds the club records for goals scored in a league match, season and career. He also played league football for Fulham, Brentford, Millwall, Swansea Town and Clapton Orient and later managed IFK Göteborg. Playing career Fulham After being spotted by Phil Kelso scoring prolifically for local Hackney Marshes side Vicar of Wakefield, Morris joined Second Division club Fulham in May 1919. Mark Robinson (born 21 November 1968 in Manchester, England) is an English former footballer who played as a full back for English clubs West Bromwich Albion, Barnsley, Newcastle United, Swindon Town and Chippenham Town. Robinson started his career with Midlands-based outfit West Brom where he made only 2 league outings before a move to Barnsley. Robinson played over 150 games for the Tykes becoming a firm fans faviouate. This then led to Kevin Keegan paying £450,000 to take the defender to Newcastle United, March 1993. Robinson helped the Magpies secure promotion to the Premier League later that season. In 1994 he suffered a broken leg in a horror tackle by a Hartlepool player, and Keegan said "we came to Hartlepool to help the club out financially, and we've ended up with a player fighting to save his career". Peter Downsborough
Peter Downsborough (13 September 1943 – 26 September 2019) was a League Cup and Anglo Italian Cup winning English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Career A centre forward as a schoolboy, he transferred into the role of goalkeeper after deputising for an injured teammate during a school match. Downsborough made his League debut for his local side Halifax Town just before his 17th birthday and went on to play in 148 games in total before being signed for Swindon Town by Danny Williams. He made his Swindon debut in the first game of the 1965/66 season, keeping a clean sheet against local rivals Oxford United at the County Ground. George Hunt (defender)
George Hunt (27 February 1922 – 1987) was an English footballer who played as a right back. He left school at the age of 14 and began work in the Great Western Railway Works. Hunt originally played football as an amateur for local team Ferndale Athletic, but joined the Army on the outbreak of World War II. During the war he served in the Middle East and alongside the Desert Rats. It was during a game between armed services in Italy that he was approached by Stan Cullis of Wolverhampton Wanderers, who offered him a trial at the club when the war finished. Hunt declined and returned to Swindon on demob. Swindon Town offered him a series of trials with him playing in the outside right position, but an injury during a game led him to dropping back into defence and taking up the right back role. Harold John Fleming
Harold John Fleming (30 April 1887 – 23 August 1955) was an English footballer who played as an inside forward for Swindon Town and the England national team. He is the only Swindon Town player to have featured for England. Club career Fleming began his career at St. Marks before being invited for a trial at Swindon Town by manager Sam Allen. He joined the club in 1907. Fleming scored a brace in a 4–0 win over Salisbury and was swiftly signed on a full-time basis. Fleming became a Swindon Town legend scoring 203 times in 332 games in 17 years at the club. If not for World War I his career may have been more successful. He worked as a physical education instructor during the conflict. During his career, Fleming had a style of football boot named after him.
