Nobutaka Taguchi
is a retired Japanese breaststroke swimmer. He competed in the 100 m and 200 m breaststroke and 4 × 100 m medley relay at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won two medals in 1972, a gold in the 100 m and a bronze in the 200 m events. His breaststroke gold medal was the first for Japan since 1956. He won during the five-year era dominated by John Hencken and David Wilkie. He also earned the bronze medal in the 200 m breaststroke at the 1972 Olympics and in both breaststrokes at the 1975 World Championships. He ended his career after the 1976 Olympics. Later life In 1987 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. He became a lecturer at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya in 1984, and a professor of physical education in 1993. He became professor emeritus in 2017. John Murphy (swimmer)
John Joseph Murphy (born July 19, 1953) is an American former backstroke and freestyle swimmer who attended Indiana University and won a gold in the 4x100 freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Beginning around the mid-80's, he worked as a CPA in New Mexico, and coached age group swimming in Los Alamos and Santa Fe. Hinsdale Central High School Born in the Chicago area on July 19, 1953, he swam Hinsdale Central High School, in the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale, and was coached by Don Watson. An exceptionally dominant team in Illinois, in March, 1969, Hinsdale Central convincingly won the Illinois State Championship in Evanston, with Murphy finishing first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.4. Mel Nash (born c. 1955) is a retired American swimmer who won a gold and a bronze medal at the world championships in 1973 and 1975. He also won the 100 m backstroke event at the 1971 Pan American Games. In 1972, he was chosen by the ''Swimming World Magazine'' as the national high school swimmer of the year. Rick Colella
Richard Phillip Colella, Jr. (born December 14, 1951) is an American former breaststroke swimmer who represented the United States at two consecutive Summer Olympics. In Munich in 1972 he placed fourth in the 200-meter breaststroke final and in Montreal in 1976, he captured a bronze medal in the final of the men's 200-meter breaststroke. Colella was born December 14, 1951 in Seattle and attended Seattle's Nathan Hale High School where he graduated in 1969. He trained and competed with Seattle's Cascade Swim Club at least by his High School Sophomore year. Rod Strachan
Rodney Strachan (born October 16, 1955) is an American former high school and college competition swimmer, 1976 Olympic gold medalist, and physician with a specialization in internal medicine. Starting at the age of eight, Rod did age group training and competition with the Sammy Lee Swim School on Anaheim's Lincoln Avenue under Swimming Hall of Fame Coach John Urbanchek who swam for and later coached the University of Michigan. When the Sammy Lee Club disbanded in 1967, Rod swam for Anaheim Aquatics under Urbanchek until he left for USC, while swimming additional high school swim practices. He returned to Anaheim Aquatics, after graduating USC, until he retired from swimming. Eventually the Anaheim Club became the Fullerton Anaheim Swim Club, still coached by Urbancheck, and Strachan continued swimming with the club shortly after Olympic trials in June 1976, where he excelled. András Hargitay
András Hargitay (born 17 March 1956) is a retired swimmer from Hungary, who won the bronze medal in the 400 m individual medley at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He finished fourth in the same event at the 1976 and 1980 Games, missing the bronze medal by less than 0.3 seconds in both cases. In 1974, he set a new world record in the 400 m medley. Gunnar Larsson (swimmer)
Karl Gunnar Larsson (born 12 May 1951) is a former swimmer from Sweden. He won the 400 metre individual medley event at the 1972 Summer Olympics by two one-thousandths (0.002) of a second over American Tim McKee, breaking the Olympic record. The controversy over the accuracy of such timing was the reason the international swimming rules were subsequently changed, and today swimming times are measured in hundredths of a second. He also won the 200 metre individual medley event at the same Olympic Games, setting the new world record. Two years earlier, Larsson received the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal due to his swimming at the 1970 European championships where he won three gold (200 metre medley, 400 metre medley and 400 metre freestyle) and one silver (200 m freestyle). Hartmut Flöckner (born 27 June 1953) is a retired German swimmer. He competed at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics in six events in total, and won a silver medal in the 4 × 100 m medley relay in 1972. Steven Garrett Gregg (November 3, 1955 – September 11, 2024) was an American competition swimming (sport), swimmer. He won silver medals in the 200 m butterfly event at the 1976 Olympics, 1975 Pan American Games, and 1973 and 1978 world championships. After graduating from North Carolina State University, he defended a PhD in exercise biochemistry and physiology at University of California, Berkeley, and eventually settled in the Chicago area with his family. Early swimming Gregg was born on November 3, 1955, in Wilmington, Delaware, and attended the private college-prep Tatnall School in New Castle County, Delaware, outside Wilmington. Robin James Backhaus (born February 12, 1955) is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic medalist, and former world record-holder. High School swimming He attended Cope Junior High School and later swam for both Redlands Senior High School and the Redlands Aquatics Association in Redlands, California. In 1973, in his Senior year in High School, he moved to Northern California from the Redlands near Los Angeles and swam with and graduated from San Rafael High School near San Francisco while also swimming with the Marin Aquatic Club under Don Swartz.
