The Swimming (sport), Swimming competition at the 3rd Pan American Games was held in Chicago, United States during the Games' run in 1959. It consisted of 16 long course (50 m) events: 8 for males and 8 for females. In these Games, the U.S. swept all gold medals in swimming. A world record was broken by the U.S. in the women's medley relay, with a time of 4:44.6. Charles Bittick
Charles Greene Bittick Jr. (November 2, 1939 – April 28, 2005) was an American water polo player and swimmer. He was a member of the American water polo team that finished seventh at the 1960 Olympics. He played five matches and scored three goals. He won three silver medals, two in the 100 m backstroke and one in water polo, at the Pan American Games in 1959–63. In 1960, Bittick briefly held the world record in the 200 m backstroke, and in 1961 he won the 400 yd medley event at the AAU championships, setting a new national record. After retiring from competitions he settled in Yorba Linda, California, where he worked as a broker for Farmer's Insurance. He remained active in recreational sports, and in 1997 climbed Mount Rainier; he also crossed the Sea of Cortés in a kayak, together with his brother. Frank Winters (swimmer)
Frank Mitchell Winters (born January 23, 1964) is an American former professional football player who was a center in the National Football League (NFL) for the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Green Bay Packers. He played college football for the Western Illinois Leathernecks. Early life Frank Mitchell Winters was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. He lived in Union City, and played football at Emerson High School. Career Winters played American football at Western Illinois University and was selected in the tenth round of the 1987 NFL draft. Michael Francis Troy (October 3, 1940 – August 3, 2019) was an American competitive swimmer, a two-time Olympic champion, and world record-holder in three events. The peak of Troy's swimming career occurred between 1959 and 1960 while he was coached by Doc Counsilman of the Indiana Hoosiers swimming and diving team at Indiana University. At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, he won his first gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. team in the men's 4×200-meter freestyle relay. Individually, he won a second gold with his first-place finish in the men's 200-meter butterfly—his signature event. Early life Originally from Schenectady, New York, Gillanders graduated from Dondero High School in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1957. Manuel Sanguily
Manuel Sanguily (7 February 1933 – 15 November 2022) was a Cuban-American physician and swimmer who represented Cuba in the 1952 Summer Olympics and in the 1956 Summer Olympics. He was also the flag bearer for Cuba at the 1956 games. Following his retirement from swimming, he studied medicine at La Habana Medical School. After the school was closed by Fidel Castro, Sanguilly moved to the United States and studied at Ohio State University. He worked as a doctor at a practice in Circleville, Ohio before moving to Tarrytown, New York and working in private practice. In 2010, he was sentenced to thirty months in prison for his role in large-scale prescription fraud.
