Swift Moth
The Hepialidae are a Scientific classification, family of insects in the lepidopteran Scientific classification, order. Moths of this family are often referred to as swift moths or ghost moths. Taxonomy and systematics The Hepialidae constitute by far the most diverse group of the infraorder Exoporia. The 82 Scientific classification, genera contain at least 700 currently recognised Scientific classification, species of these primitive moths worldwide. The genera ''Fraus (genus), Fraus'' (Endemism, endemic to Australia), ''Gazoryctra'' (Holarctic), ''Afrotheora'' (Southern African), and ''Antihepialus'' (African) are considered to be the most primitive, containing four genera and about 51 species with a mostly relictual southern Gondwanan distribution and are currently separated from the Hepialidae ''sensu stricto'' which might form a natural, Synapomorphy, derived group. James Francis Stephens
James Francis Stephens (16 September 1792 – 22 December 1852) was an England, English entomologist and naturalist. He is known for his 12 volume ''Illustrations of British Entomology'' (1846) and the ''Manual of British Beetles'' (1839). Early life Stephens was born in Shoreham-by-Sea and studied at Christ's Hospital. His father was a navy captain William James Stephens (d. 1799) and his mother was Mary Peck (later Mrs Dallinger). He went to school at the Blue Coat School, Hertford and later at Christ's Hospital, London. He was then sent to study under Shute Barrington (1734–1826), the bishop of Durham in 1800. He left in 1807 and worked as a clerk in the Admiralty office, Somerset House, from 1807 to 1845 thanks to his uncle Admiral Stephens. Heloxycanus
''Heloxycanus patricki'', also known as the sphagnum porina moth, is a species of moth of the family Hepialidae, the ghost moths. It is the only member of the genus ''Heloxycanus''. This species is endemic to New Zealand. It has been classified as having the status of "At Risk, Declining" by the Department of Conservation. Taxonomy This species was first described in 1994 by John S. Dugdale using a specimen collected by Brian Patrick at Dansey Pass on 8 April 1979. The species is named for its discoverer. The holotype specimen for this species is held at the New Zealand Arthropod Collection. Description The wingspan of the female moth is 48–55mm while the male moth is between 40–45mm. There is a variation in colouration between the southern population in comparison to the northern and western populations.
