Swedish Commercial Employees' Union
The Swedish Commercial Employees' Union ( sv, Handelsanställdas Förbund, Handels), is Sweden's third-largest blue-collar union, with some 145,000 members, of whom around 25,000 are retired. Women make up over 70 percent of its membership. The union was established on 15 April 1906, with the merger of the Malmo Goods Exporters' Union, the Lunds Goods Carriers' Union, the Stockholm Dairy Farmers' Union, the Stockholm Bread Carriers' Union, and the Stockholm Beer Drivers' Union. Although it had only 682 members, it was able to employ a full-time president. In 1910, it joined the Swedish Trade Union Confederation. In 1922, the Swedish Dairy Farmers' Union merged in, followed in 1928 by the Press Agency Staff Union, and the Swedish Cinema Staff Union in 1936, although the cinema workers transferred to the Swedish Musicians' Union in 1952, and the dairy workers transferred to the Swedish Food Workers' Union in 1968. The Swedish Trade Union Confederation ( sv, Landsorganisationen i Sverige ; literally "National Organisation in Sweden"), commonly referred to as LO (), is a national trade union centre, an umbrella organisation for fourteen Swedish trade unions that organise mainly " blue-collar" workers. The Confederation, which gathers in total about 1.5 million employees out of Sweden's 10 million people population, was founded in 1898 by blue-collar unions on the initiative of the 1897 Scandinavian Labour Congress and the Swedish Social Democratic Party, which almost exclusively was made up by trade unions. Susanna Gideonsson (born 19 May 1963) is a Swedish trade union leader. Born in Umnäs, Gideonsson moved around Sweden with her family until they settled in Lycksele. She worked part-time delivering newspapers from the age of 14, when she joined the Swedish Transport Workers' Union. At the age of sixteen, she began working in the local woodworking factory, and in 1983, she was elected as leader of the joint committee of Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) affiliated unions in the town. After the factory was sold, she was unemployed for a period before finding work with the forestry service. In 1989, Giedonsson became the regional leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League in Västerbotten, and through this joined the Swedish Commercial Employees' Union. Swedish Musicians' Union
The Swedish Musicians' Union ( sv, Musikerförbundet, Musikerna) is a trade union representing musicians in Sweden. The union was founded on 19 December 1907 in Stockholm, with about 700 members. It grew very slowly until World War II, but this changed after it joined the Swedish Trade Union Confederation in 1939. It moved from 1,954 members in 1938, to 13,240 in 1946. The Association of Stage and Film and the Swedish Notary Writers' Association transferred in during 1942, followed in 1948 by the Stockholm Film and Theatre Workers' Union. In 1952, the cinema section of the Swedish Municipal Workers' Union transferred in, followed in 1965 by the Association of Swedish Chamber Musicians and the Association of Musical Artists. Swedish Food Workers' Union
The Swedish Food Workers' Union ( sv, Livsmedelsarbetareförbundet, Livs) is a trade union representing workers in the food and drink industries in Sweden. The union was founded on 1 January 1922, when the Swedish Bakery and Confectionery Workers' Union merged with the Swedish Butchers' Union. Like both its predecessors, it affiliated to the Swedish Trade Union Confederation. On foundation, it had 9,372 members and by 1959 had grown to 38,053. The Swedish Tobacco Industry Workers' Union joined in 1964, followed by the Swedish Brewery Industry Workers' Union in 1965, and the dairy workers' section of the Swedish Commercial Employees' Union in 1968. Its all-time peak membership was 53,131 in 1985, but this dropped to 22,877 by 2019. The Swedish Hairdressers' Union ( sv, Frisöranställdas förbund, FAF) was a trade union representing hairdressers in Sweden. The union was founded in December 1906, on the initiative of the Barbers' and Hairdressers' Assistants' Association of Stockholm. It initially had 225 members, but struggled, and in 1910 was down to just 46. This proved its nadir, and membership then steadily increased, to a peak of 7,207 in 1968. Bengt Lloyd
Bengt Lloyd (4 March 1928 – June 2013) was a Swedish trade union leader. Born in Malmö, Lloyd began working as a clerk at the Swedish Commercial Employees' Union (Handels), where he gradually rose to prominence. In 1953, he was given responsibility for the union's propaganda work, then soon became its education secretary. In 1959, he was put in charge of negotiations, and then in 1968, he became third president of the union. He progressed to vice president in 1974, and president in 1982. In 1987, he additionally became president of the International Federation of Commercial, Clerical, Professional and Technical Employees (FIET).
