Sir Desmond Angus Swayne (born 20 August 1956) is a British Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament for New Forest West since 1997 United Kingdom general election, 1997. Before going into politics, Swayne was a teacher, and then a manager at the Royal Bank of Scotland. Charles Swayne
Charles Swayne (August 10, 1842 – July 5, 1907) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida. In 1904, he was impeached, but remained on the bench after the impeachment trial ended in an acquittal. Education and career Born in Guyencourt, Delaware, Swayne received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1871. He was in private practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1871 to 1885, and in Pensacola, Florida from 1885 to 1889. In 1888, he was an unsuccessful Republican candidate for the Florida Supreme Court. Federal judicial service Swayne received a recess appointment from President Benjamin Harrison on May 17, 1889, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida vacated by Judge Thomas Settle. Kevin Swayne (born January 17, 1975) is a former American football wide receiver for the New York Dragons of the Arena Football League (AFL). In the past, he had played for Wayne State College, the Iowa Barnstormers ( AFL), the Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins, New York Jets ( NFL) and the Orlando Rage. William Marshall Swayne (December 1, 1828 – May 1, 1918) was an American sculptor and writer who lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Biography William Marshall Swayne, commonly known as Marshall Swayne, was born on December 1, 1828, in Pennsbury Township, Pennsylvania. He married Mary S. Barnard in 1850 and had eight children. At the suggestion of Supreme Court justice Noah Haynes Swayne, he was appointed to the United States Treasury Department by President Abraham Lincoln. Swayne had a farm in East Marlborough Township, Pennsylvania, and later lived in Kennett Square. He died on May 1, 1918. William Swayne
William Shuckburgh Swayne (1862–1941) was a Church of England bishop and author who served as Dean of Manchester then Bishop of Lincoln in the first half of the 20th century. Born in 1862 he was educated at New College, Oxford and ordained in 1886. He began his ecclesiastical career with curacies at Lyndhurst and Stalbridge and was then Diocesan Lecturer for Lichfield. After this he held incumbencies at St Matthew's Church, Walsall and then St Peter's, Cranley Gardens, a post he held until his consecration to the episcopate. Wager Swayne
Wager Swayne (November 10, 1834December 18, 1902) was a Union Army colonel during the American Civil War and was appointed as the last major general of volunteers of the Union Army. Swayne received America's highest military decoration the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Second Battle of Corinth. He also was effectively the military governor of Alabama from March 2, 1867, to July 14, 1868, after the passage of the first Reconstruction Act by the U.S. Congress until Alabama was readmitted to the Union. Robert M. Patton remained the nominal governor during this period but as the local army commander, Swayne controlled the State government. During the Reconstruction era, Swayne oversaw the Freedmen's Bureau in Alabama and helped establish schools for African Americans in the state. Steven R. Swayne is a professor of music and currently music department chair at Dartmouth College. He has authored a study of the music of American musical theater composer Stephen Sondheim and a biography of American composer and educator William Schuman. Swayne is a native of Los Angeles, California and is a graduate of John Muir High School and Occidental College. He has graduate degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and the University of California, Berkeley (MA, Ph.D.). Noah Haynes Swayne (December 7, 1804 – June 8, 1884) was an American jurist and politician. He was the first Republican appointed as a justice to the United States Supreme Court. Early life Swayne was born in Frederick County, Virginia in the uppermost reaches of the Shenandoah Valley, approximately northwest of Washington D.C. Lieutenant-General Sir John George des Reaux Swayne KCB CBE (3 July 1890 – 16 December 1964) was a senior British Army officer who became General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of South-Eastern Command during the Second World War. Military career Born the son of William Swayne, the Bishop of Lincoln, Swayne, after being educated at Charterhouse School and the University of Oxford, was commissioned into the Somerset Light Infantry in 1911. He served in the First World War, spending most of it as a prisoner of war. Joseph Griffiths Swayne (1819–1903) was an English obstetric physician. He is now known for investigations on cholera, which may have anticipated the discovery of the responsible micro-organism by Robert Koch Life Born on 18 October 1819 in Bristol, he was the second son of John Champeny Swayne, a lecturer on midwifery in the Bristol medical school; his mother was the eldest daughter of Thomas Griffiths, an apothecary in Bristol. After education at Bristol college, where one of his teachers was Francis William Newman, he was apprenticed to his father and at the same time studied at the medical school and the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
