Surfing
Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual, a surfer (or two in tandem surfing), uses a board to ride on the forward section, or face, of a moving wave of water, which usually carries the surfer towards the shore. Waves suitable for surfing are primarily found on ocean shores, but can also be found as standing waves in the open ocean, in lakes, in rivers in the form of a tidal bore, or wave pools. Surfing includes all forms of wave-riding using a board, regardless of the stance. There are several types of boards. The Moche of Peru would often surf on reed craft, while the native peoples of the Pacific surfed waves on alaia, paipo, and other such watercraft. Brazil At The Olympics
Brazil first participated at the Olympic Games in 1920, after missing the previous five Summer editions. The country has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the 1928 Games. As of 2024, Brazilian athletes have won a total of 170 medals in 18 different Summer sports. Brazil has also participated in the Winter Olympic Games since 1992. Due to Brazil being mostly a tropical nation, to this date no Brazilian athlete has won an Olympic medal in the winter sports and the country's best result at the Winter Olympics was a ninth place by snowboarder Isabel Clark Ribeiro at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Surfing At The 2020 Summer Olympics
Surfing made its Summer Olympics debut in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The Olympics were originally scheduled to be held in 2020, but were postponed to 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Setting In 2018, the International Surfing Association (ISA) announced that surfing at the 2020 Summer Olympics would take place in the ocean, and not in an artificial wave pool. The contest site for the 2020 Games was announced to be Tsurigasaki Beach located about outside of Tokyo in Ichinomiya, Chiba. To ensure quality surf, the contest featured a waiting period of 16 days. When the event ran, it took two days to finish the competition. Gabriel Medina
Gabriel Medina Pinto Ferreira (born 22 December 1993) is a Brazilian professional surfer. He won the 2014, 2018 and 2021 WSL World Championships. In two appearances at the Olympic surfing tournament, Medina won a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympic Games. In 2009, at age 15, Medina became the youngest surfer ever to win a major Qualifying Series event. He joined the World Surf League Tour in 2011 alongside eventual rival John John Florence, and in his rookie year he finished within the top 12 of the ASP (now WSL) World Tour. Since 2015, Medina has earned more Championship Tour victories than any other competitor. Media sources credit him as being the second person to have executed a maneuver called the "Backflip". Rodrigo Augusto do Espírito Santo (born September 22, 1979), known as Rodrigo Koxa, is a Brazilian professional big wave surfer and extreme waterman who broke the world record for largest wave ever surfed at Nazaré, Portugal, on November 8, 2017. Biography Rodrigo Koxa was born in Jundiaí, Brazil on September 22, 1979, and began his surfing career in 1988 on the beaches of Guarujá, Brazil. On April 30, 2018, Koxa won the coveted Quiksilver XXL Biggest Wave prize, in the Big Wave Awards of World Surf League (WSL). His wave was recognised by judges of the Santa Monica, CA-based Big Wave Awards as the biggest wave ever surfed in history.
