Sunnfjord ( - in contrast to Nordfjord) is a Districts of Norway, traditional district in Western Norway located in Vestland counties of Norway, county. It includes the List of municipalities of Norway, municipalities of Askvoll, Fjaler, the southernmost parts of Kinn, Sunnfjord (municipality), Sunnfjord, and the southernmost parts of Bremanger. It covers an area of about and has a population (2016) of 43,324—about 8% of the population of Vestland county. The central geographical characteristic of the Sunnfjord region are the fjords: Dalsfjorden (Sunnfjord), Dalsfjorden and Førdefjorden. It is a tourist region, with waterfalls, fishing, white-water rafting, glaciers, hiking, and scenery—including Jostedalsbreen National Park. Vestland is a Counties of Norway, county in Norway. The county is located in Western Norway, and its administrative centre is Bergen, where the executive and political leadership is based. Kinn
Kinn is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It was established on 1 January 2020. It is in the traditional districts of Nordfjord and Sunnfjord. The municipality is the only non-contiguous municipality in Norway since the municipality of Bremanger lies in between the north and south parts of Kinn. The administrative centres of the municipality is the two cities of Florø and Måløy. Some villages in the municipality include Rognaldsvåg, Stavang, Grov, Norddalsfjord, Nyttingnes, Steinhovden, Brandsøy, Deknepollen, Holvika, Kvalheim, Langeneset, Raudeberg, Refvika, Silda, Tennebø, Vedvika, and Vågsvåg. Førde (town)
Førde is the administrative centre of Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The town is located at the eastern end of the Førdefjorden, at the mouth of the river Jølstra. The town has a population (2019) of 10,339 and a population density of . On 21 April 1965, the decision was made to develop Førde into a regional center . The Gerhardsen government at the time aimed to reduce the rate of migration from the countryside to the large cities. A total of nine locations were designated in the country, and Førde was one of those that were developed. Førde's population in 1951 was only 3,080, but by 1980, it had grown to 7,086. Førde is a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality in the Counties of Norway, county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. It was located in the Districts of Norway, traditional district of Sunnfjord. The administrative center was the town of Førde (town), Førde which in 2016 had 10,255 inhabitants. Naustdal (village)
Naustdal is a village in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern shore of the Førdefjorden at the mouth of the river Nausta, which flows through the Naustdalen valley. The village sits about northwest of the town of Førde and about northeast of the village of Helle. Kletten Hill rises southeast of the village. Black Friday (1945)
On 9 February 1945, near the end of the Second World War, a force of Allied Bristol Beaufighter aircraft suffered many losses during an attack on the German destroyer German destroyer Z33, ''Z33'' and its escorting vessels; the operation was called Black Friday by the survivors. The German ships were sheltering in a strong defensive position in Førde Fjord, Norway, forcing the Allied aircraft to attack through massed anti-aircraft fire (''FlaK''). The Beaufighters and their escort of North American P-51 Mustang, Mustang Mk III fighters from 65 Squadron RAF were intercepted by twelve Focke-Wulf Fw 190s of ''Jagdgeschwader 5'' (Fighter Wing 5) of the ''Luftwaffe''. The Allies damaged at least two of the German ships for the loss of seven Beaufighters shot down by FlaK. Jostedalsbreen National Park
Jostedalsbreen National Park () is a national park in Norway that encompasses the largest glacier on the European mainland, Jostedalsbreen. The park was established by royal decree on 25 October 1991, and then in 1998, it was enlarged to the northwest. The park now covers , with the glaciers covering about of the park. Dalsfjorden is a fjord in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the municipalities of Askvoll, Fjaler, and Sunnfjord. It is one of the two main fjords that comprise the Sunnfjord region of the county. The fjord is about long and it is generally about wide. The Dalsfjorden is a narrow fjord that cuts into roughly eastwards from the village of Vilnes on the island of Atløyna in Askvoll municipality. Fjord
In physical geography, a fjord (also spelled fiord in New Zealand English; ) is a long, narrow sea inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by a glacier.
