Summer Playhouse (1954 TV Series)
''Summer Playhouse'' is a 30-minute NBC summer anthology television series broadcast in the summers of 1954 and 1957. It consisted of reruns of episodes previously aired on other anthology series. ''Summer Playhouse'' is unrelated to a CBS series of the same name that aired during the summers of 1964 and 1965. Broadcast history ''Summer Playhouse'' premiered on July 6, 1954, and ran until August 24, 1954, airing on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time. It returned three summers later in July 1957, premiering on July 2 and airing from 9:30 to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Its final episode was broadcast on September 17, 1957. Nelson Case
Nelson Case (February 3, 1910 – March 24, 1976) was an American radio and television announcer. Case was the son of Walter and Ethel Case. His father was a newspaperman, and his mother was a driving force in the Long Beach Community Players. He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School and first worked as an announcer on the school's radio station. One of his early ventures into entertainment came when "as a youngster in Long Beach, he sang and played the uke for a band called the Sunset Symphonic Six." He was a graduate of the College of William & Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he met his future wife. Although Case was best known for being an announcer on popular radio and television programs (in 1953, he was "on radio 20 times a week, on TV three" ), a 1941 newspaper article noted that he "covered everything from news and special events to sports." Jane Wyman
Jane Wyman ( ; born Sarah Jane Mayfield; January 5, 1917 – September 10, 2007). was an American actress. A star of both movies and television, she received an Academy Award for Best Actress, four Golden Globe Awards and nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards. In 1960 she received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for both motion pictures and television. She was the first wife of actor and future U.S. President Ronald Reagan. According to studio biographies Jane Wyman made her theatrical film debut in '' The Kid from Spain'' (1932) as an uncredited chorus girl. Wyman always maintained that she got her start in 1934 at 17 dancing in the chorus for LeRoy Prinz at Paramount Pictures. Anthology Series
An anthology series is a written series, radio, television, film, or video game series that presents a different story and a different set of characters in each different episode, season, segment, or short. These usually have a different cast in each episode, but several series in the past, such as '' Four Star Playhouse'', employed a permanent troupe of character actors who would appear in a different drama each week. Background and production The practice of television executives of ordering dozens of pilots for proposed television series each year – far more than their networks could possibly broadcast as series – created a sizable body of unsold pilots that had never aired. Packaging these unsold pilots in anthology series and airing them during the summer provided television networks with a way of both providing fresh programming during the summer rerun season and recouping at least some of the expense of producing them.
