Subdivisions Of Wales
The subdivisions of Wales constitute a hierarchy of administrative divisions and non-administrative ceremonial areas. For the purposes of local government, the country is divided into principal areas, of either ''counties'' or ''county boroughs'', and communities. The current system is the result of incremental reform which has its origins in legislation enacted in 1972 and 1994. Administrative Principal areas There are 22 principal areas of Wales. They were established on 1 April 1996 by the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994 (1994 c. 19). Eleven are styled "counties", including the cities of Cardiff and Swansea, and eleven are styled "county boroughs", including the cities of Newport and Wrexham. Local Government In Wales
Local government in Wales is primarily undertaken by the twenty-two principal councils. The councils are Unitary authority, unitary authorities, meaning they are responsible for providing local government services within their Principal areas of Wales, principal area, including education, social work, environmental protection, and most highway maintenance. The principal areas are divided into Community (Wales), communities, most of which have an elected community council. The services provided by community councils vary, but they will typically maintain public spaces and facilities. Clwyd
Clwyd ( , ) is a preserved counties of Wales, preserved county of Wales, situated in the north-east corner of the country; it is named after the River Clwyd, which runs through the area. To the north lies the Irish Sea, with the English ceremonial counties of Cheshire to the east and Shropshire to the south-east. Powys and Gwynedd lie to the south and west respectively. Growing Mid Wales Partnership
Mid Wales ( or simply ''Y Canolbarth'', meaning "the midlands"), or Central Wales, is a region of Wales, encompassing its midlands, in-between North Wales and South Wales. The Mid Wales Regional Committee of the Senedd covered the unitary authority areas of Ceredigion and Powys and the area of Gwynedd that had previously been the district of Meirionnydd. A similar definition is used by the BBC. The Wales Spatial Plan defines a region known as "Central Wales" which covers Ceredigion and Powys. Mid Wales is dominated by the Cambrian Mountains, including the Green Desert of Wales. The region is sparsely populated, with an economy dependent on farming and small businesses. Swansea Bay City Region
The Swansea Bay City Region (), is a city region in Wales. It is a partnership between the local authorities of Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Swansea, local businesses in southwest Wales and other organisations with the support of the Welsh Government. The Swansea Bay City Region is coterminous with the area defined as South West Wales. Historical background Local authorities in the South West Wales area made a bid for city region status during early 2012. Regional Economy In Wales
Regional economy in Wales is centred on four regional economic boards in Wales. Each board oversees a city or growth deal, signed between 2016 and 2022, lasting 10–15 years. Two of the deals are city deals signed and proposed by their respective economic boards, and their areas are described as "city regions"; the Cardiff Capital Region and Swansea Bay City Region. Corporate Joint Committee
A Corporate Joint Committee (CJC; ) is a type of local government in Wales, local government institution introduced in Wales by the Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act 2021. History A Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act 2021 became law in January 2021. It contained provisions to reduce the voting age from 18 to 16 for local elections in Wales and to extend the franchise to include eligible foreign nationals. It extended the term of local councillors from four years to five years. The law allows local councils to decide to continue to hold elections under first past the post system or to switch to the single transferable vote system. Gwent (county)
Gwent is a Preserved counties of Wales, preserved county and former local government county in southeast Wales. A county of Gwent was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972; it was named after the ancient Kingdom of Gwent. The authority was a successor to both the Administrative counties of Wales, administrative county of Monmouthshire (historic), Monmouthshire (with minor boundary changes) and the county borough of Newport, Wales, Newport (both authorities which were legally part of England until the Act came into force although Wales and Monmouthshire, considered jointly with Wales for certain purposes). West Glamorgan
West Glamorgan () is a former administrative county in South Wales. It is now a preserved county. West Glamorgan was one of the divisions of the ancient county of Glamorgan. It was created on 1 April 1974, by the Local Government Act 1972 from the county borough of Swansea, the municipal boroughs of Neath and Port Talbot, the urban districts of Glyncorrwg and Llwchwr, Gower Rural District, Pontardawe Rural District, and all of Neath Rural District except the parish of Rhigos.
