''Suavemente'' () is the debut studio album by American merenguero recording artist Elvis Crespo. Released by Sony Music Latin on April 14, 1998, the album established Crespo as a leading artist in the Latin music market. He collaborated with several songwriters and record producers to create an overall tropical music-flavored recording. With romantic ballads and uptempo songs, ''Suavemente'' received favorable reviews from music critics who found the recording to contain energetic and catchy tracks. The album was commercially successful; it became the first merengue recording to peak at number one on the United States ''Billboard'' Top Latin Albums chart. "Suavemente" () is a song recorded and composed by Puerto Rican merengue singer Elvis Crespo on his first solo album, '' Suavemente'', which followed his departure from Grupo Manía. Released as the lead single, "Suavemente" reached number one on the ''Billboard'' Hot Latin Tracks on May 16, 1998, and remained atop the chart for six weeks. Crespo re-recorded it with Spanglish lyrics. The song also hit the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 as well as received a Premios Lo Nuestro award and two Latin ''Billboard'' Music Awards the following year. "Suavemente" was the tenth best-performing Latin single of 1998. The song has been covered by several artists, some of whom also charted. Background Elvis Crespo started his singing career as a backup vocalist for merengue singers Willie Berrios, Lenny Perez, and Toño Rosario. Gaudelia Díaz Romero (born in 1964) is a Mexican former paralympic athlete who competed mainly in category B1 distance events. She is also a singer, pianist and actress who has performed under the pseudonym Crystal since the 1980s. Among her hits are "Suavemente" and "No Me Pregunten Por Él". In the 1990s, Díaz was part of the Mexican team that traveled to Barcelona, Spain for the 1992 Summer Paralympics. There she competed in the 800 meters (ended fourth), 1500m (ended fourth) and 3000m, the last one earned her a bronze medal.
