Stuur Groete aan Mannetjies Roux (English: "Send greetings to Mannetjies Roux") is a 2013 film in Afrikaans about a teenage girl who visits her aunt and uncle on their Karoo farm during the school vacation. She makes a series of discoveries: she finds out who she really is and where she comes from. Three visitors in one week change her life forever, and her uncle's obsession with the try by Mannetjies Roux is finally explained. The film has nothing to do with the life of South African rugby player Mannetjies Roux, but rather with the try which he scored in 1962 in Bloemfontein against the British Lions. The film is based on the title and lyrics of one of Laurika Rauch's most famous songs "''Stuur Groete aan Mannetjies Roux''". The song describes life on the uncle's farm from the girl's point-of-view, most notably the uncle's Diesel-powered car, the longing for rain and the try scored by Mannetjies Roux. The Karoo ( ; from the Afrikaans borrowing of the South Khoekhoe !Orakobab or Khoemana word ''ǃ’Aukarob'' "Hardveld") is a semi- desert natural region of South Africa. Diesel fuel , also called diesel oil, is any liquid fuel specifically designed for use in a diesel engine, a type of internal combustion engine in which fuel ignition takes place without a spark as a result of compression of the inlet air and then injection of fuel. Try (rugby)
A try is a way of scoring points in rugby union and rugby league football. A try is scored by grounding the ball in the opposition's in-goal area (on or behind the goal line). Rugby union and league differ slightly in defining "grounding the ball" and the "in-goal" area. In rugby union a try is worth 5 points, in rugby league a try is worth 4 points. The term "try" comes from "try at goal", signifying that grounding the ball originally only gave the attacking team the opportunity to try to score with a kick at goal. A try is analogous to a touchdown in American and Canadian football, with the major difference being that a try requires the ball be simultaneously touching the ground and an attacking player, whereas a touchdown merely requires that the ball enter the end zone while in the possession of a player. Mannetjies Roux
Francois Du Toit "Mannetjies" Roux (born 12 April 1939) is a former South African rugby player. He was capped 27 times; 6 times at wing and 21 times at centre, scoring 6 tries. Rugby career Born in Victoria West and educated at Paarl Boys High, he went to Stellenbosch University; an institution known for serving as a conveyor belt of future Springboks. Later on he joined the South African Air Force in Pretoria where he was a Harvard instructor. He won his first cap, at wing, against Wales in Cardiff in 1960, which the Springboks won 3-0 thanks to a Keith Oxlee penalty. The selectors chose him as a wing on occasions as they thought him difficult to combine with in mid-field. He possessed a great deal of pace and was a ferocious defender, despite his lack of size. Ian Roberts (South African Actor)
Ian Roberts (born 30 November 1951) is a South African actor, playwright and singer. A native English speaker, he is also fluent in Afrikaans and Xhosa. Early life Roberts was born in Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape Province and grew up on his father's citrus farm near the town. He attended St. Andrew's Preparatory School and St. Andrew's College in Grahamstown. After completing high school he performed his compulsory national service in the South African Army, which he completed in 1971. After a variety of different jobs and a course in photography at the Port Elizabeth Technical College from 1973 to 1975, Roberts enrolled at Rhodes University in 1976 for a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in speech, drama and social anthropology.
