Streetdance
Street dance is an umbrella term for a large number of social dance styles such as: breakdancing, popping, locking, house dance, waacking, voguing, etc. Social dance styles have many accompanying steps and foundations, created organically from a culture, a moment in time, a way of life, influenced by natural social interaction. A street dance is a vernacular dance in an urban context. Vernacular dances are often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and other dancers. These dances are a part of the vernacular culture of the geographical area that they come from. History Street dance evolved during the 1970s outside dance studios in any available open space. This includes streets, dance parties, block parties, parks, school yards, raves, and nightclubs. Litefeet
Litefeet, also referred to as "getting lite," is a type of street dance/vernacular dance that emerged from Harlem, New York in the early 2000s (was established in 2006) . The term comes from dancers dancing as though they have "light feet," or are weightless. The Harlem shake is commonly incorporated into the social dance Litefeet, as is the "Chicken Noodle Soup, the Tone Wop (often mistakenly named the "Toe Whop"), the Rev Up and the Aunt Jackie. Moves often include: shuffling, hat tricks, and shoe tricks. Dancers often perform on subways in New York City, where the performances are called Showtime, and at Union Square. Don Campbell (dancer)
Don "Campbellock" Campbell (January 8, 1951 – March 30, 2020) was an American dancer and choreographer who was best known for having invented the " locking" dance, and for his work with The Lockers. Born in Saint Louis, Missouri in January 1951, Campbell discovered dance while studying commercial art at Los Angeles Trade–Technical College. Early career In 1971, Campbell joined the cast of ''Soul Train'' once the program arrived in Los Angeles. He was a featured dancer until 1973, when he was removed from the program for requesting that performers be paid. He then recruited other dancers who had been removed for the same reason, and with them founded the Lockers. Campbell recorded a song in 1972 titled, "The Campbellock", to go with his new high-flying, groundbreaking dance. He also established his own dance ensemble, The Campbellock Dancers. Popin' Pete
Timothy Earl Solomon (born August 5, 1961), known as Popin' Pete, is an American dancer and choreographer who popularized the "popping" dance style and member of the Electric Boogaloos. Pete’s career has spanned over forty years since the emergence of popping dance. The Electric Boogaloos
The Electric Boogaloos are a street dance crew responsible for the spread of popping and electric boogaloo. The name "Boogaloo" came from a song called " Do a Boogaloo" by James Brown, which was also adapted as a Boogaloo street dance done from Oakland, CA. They were founded by Boogaloo Sam in Fresno, California in 1977. Their original name was the Electronic Boogaloo Lockers but "Lockers" was dropped the following year. DJ Kool Herc
Clive Campbell (born April 16, 1955), better known by his stage name DJ Kool Herc, is a Jamaican-American DJ who is credited with being the founder of hip hop music in the Bronx, New York City, in 1973. Nicknamed the Father of Hip-Hop, Campbell began playing hard funk records of the sort typified by James Brown. Campbell isolated the instrumental portion of the record which emphasized the drum beat—the " break"—and switch from one break to another. Using the same two-turntable set-up of disco DJs, he used two copies of the same record to elongate the break. This breakbeat DJing, using funky drum solos, formed the basis of hip hop music. Campbell's announcements and exhortations to dancers helped lead to the syncopated, rhythmically spoken accompaniment now known as rapping. Clogging
Clogging, buck dancing, or flatfoot dancing is a type of folk dance practiced in the United States, in which the dancer's footwear is used percussively by striking the heel, the toe, or both against a floor or each other to create audible rhythms, usually to the downbeat with the heel keeping the rhythm. Clogging can be found at various Old-Time and Bluegrass Music festivals. Clogging is the official state dance of Kentucky and North Carolina.
