Strabane
Strabane (; ) is a town in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Strabane had a population of 13,507 at the 2021 United Kingdom census, 2021 census. This article contains quotations from this source, which is available under th Open Government Licence v3.0 © Crown copyright. It lies on the east bank of the River Foyle. It is roughly midway from Omagh, Derry and Letterkenny. The River Foyle marks Irish border, the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. On the other side of the river (across Lifford Bridge) is the smaller town of Lifford, which is the county town of County Donegal, Donegal. The River Mourne flows through the centre of the town and meets the River Finn (County Donegal), Finn to form the Foyle River. Charles Hamilton (MP)
Charles Hamilton (13 November 1704 – 18 September 1786), styled The Honourable from birth, was a British politician. He was a younger son of James Hamilton, 6th Earl of Abercorn. Hamilton matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford on 4 November 1720. He received his BA in 1723. Hamilton represented Strabane in the Irish House of Commons between 1727 and 1760. He sat also for Truro in the British House of Commons from 1741 to 1747. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in Mar 1747. Hamilton's first wife, whose name seems to be unknown, died young, leaving two daughters, Jane and Sarah. He later married Agnes Cockburn of Ayr, Scotland in 1764. She died in 1772, aged 39. He was the creator of Painshill Park Hamilton was forced to sell Painshill in 1773 as he was being pressed to repay loans to Henry Fox and Henry Hoare. Hamilton retired to Bath, living in a house in the Royal Crescent. He later purchased land on Lansdown Hill where he built a house, which still stands today ... Sir John Stewart, 1st Baronet (''c.''1758 – 22 June 1825) was an Irish lawyer and politician. Colonel Nathaniel Montgomery-Moore (1757 – 4 December 1834) of Garvey, Co. Tyrone and Fassaroe Castle, Co. Wicklow was an Irish Member of Parliament. He was the son of General Alexander Montgomery of Ballyleck, Co. Monaghan, M.P. for County Monaghan in 1743–1760 and 1768–1783. Henry Pomeroy, 2nd Viscount Harberton (8 December 1749 – 29 November 1829) was an Anglo-Irish politician. He was the son of Arthur Pomeroy, 1st Viscount Harberton, and his wife Mary Colley, daughter of Henry Colley of Carbury Castle, and Lady Mary Hamilton. William Brownlow PC (I) (10 April 1726 – 28 October 1794) of Lurgan, County Armagh was an Anglo-Irish politician. George Montgomery (MP)
George Leslie Montgomery (c. 1727 – March 1787) was an Irish politician. Montgomery sat as Member of Parliament (MP) for Strabane from 1765 to 1768. He purchased the seat from John McCausland of Strabane for £2,000 after the death of the incumbent Robert Lowry when a new writ was issued for the borough on 22 October 1765. Subsequently, he represented County Cavan in the Irish House of Commons from 1768 until his death in 1787. The Cavan poll result on 2 August 1768 was Maxwell 727, Montgomery 648, Pratt 570, Newburgh 402; The poll finally closed on 11 November 1768 and the final poll was Maxwell 927, Montgomery 739, Pratt 668, Newburgh 451.
